The favorite pastime of many Americans -whether it be playing or watching- is American football. But, the chance of temporary or permanent physical and mental damage are to great of a cost to pay for this game. Roger Goodell said, “It has tremendous values that outway the risks”(Kindelan and Conway); however, the danger of this sport is too high of risk for our American athletes to risk their health and wellness. For example, the highest rate of head injuries found in high school students are in football athletes. These injuries are life altering changes that may not have ever come about if they had not played the sport.
Even though it makes sense, it is not something we know for sure, accidents happen all the time and there is no way to know that the players will be a 100% safe. For this reason, high schoolers shouldn 't risk themselves so much, an accident could happen at any time and they could have injuries that could affect the rest of their lives. In the article, "How Dangerous Is High School Football?" by Nationwide Children 's Hospital, they agreed that high school players have more risks by quoting, "High school players have greater proportions of the more severe
The Dangers of High School Football Just as it does with American sports fans and on the big screen, football reigns supreme in high school sports as well. According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, nearly 1.1 million American boys played on an 11-player high school squad, compared to just 575,628 athletes who ran the track and 535,289 who played basketball (Miller). Despite the growing number of participants, high school football has also proven to be the most dangerous out of all high school activities. High school football has the highest death rate of school sports and also holds the spot for the most concussions and long term injuries. Since the start of football season in 1980, both the average number and
As stated by source 2, many high school athletes don't have a full developed body. Inexperience and lack of knowledge of techniques could leave the athlete's body prone to injuries. Football is a high contact sport, where athletes could get hurt at any moment. Improper techniques in tackling and tackling too high could lead to brain injuries. "Over 517,726 football related injuries occurred in 2005-2006 across high schools in the United States", claimed by source 2.
Part I: The history behind the great American sport, football, is a very important subject to me as I have played the game since I was eight. As I continued playing while getting older, leagues got more competitive and injury seemed to be more prone to some than most. I can’t even recall the amount of times the game has been stopped due to someone getting the wind knocked out of them, head-to-head collisions, sometimes even broken bones. The slide about rules evolution within the College Football realm resonated with me due to the fact that during this time football was being played, people were dying from injuries and the numbers of deaths were only rising. In 1905, eighteen players died and in 1908, that number increased to thirty-three.
Yeah, I understand why they want to protest and make themselves heard, but they are doing it in an incredibly disrespectful way. I’m sure there are plenty of other ways they could think of to get their message across, but what they’re doing is just really unnecessary. By kneeling during the national anthem, the players are being very rude to all of the brave men and women who have risked their lives and died fighting for and defending America. If it wasn’t for these people, the NFL wouldn’t exist and those players wouldn’t have jobs, and especially wouldn’t be making the millions of dollars that they do. I don’t think the NFL was trying to be offensive towards the military, but they were and it’s not okay.
Football Injuries Football injuries are very common they are also known to ruin football careers. Many football players have been injured very badly from playing football and their careers have been ruined. Football is a very dangerous sport and is very harmful to a human being. There are many types of injuries some are: Anterior and Posterior cruciate ligament there are injuries in the meniscus and also Hamstring pulls. There are some common injuries also like: injuries in the knee also concussions and injuries in the hip, arm and shoulder.
We have seen it on the news about two years ago when it was first reported, somebody was offended by the Washington Redskins NFL logo. Which cause an uproar with people finding every Indian logo offensive, from youth teams to high school, college, and then professional teams. Then the lawsuits began with the Washington Redskins, according to Dan Snyder, owner of the Redskins, told ESPN writer Steve Wulf, “The name of our football team is the name of our team. And I would like to encourage you to do and everyone else to do is just look at history, and understand where the name came from, understand that it means … honor, it means respect, it means pride. And it’s that simple” (Wulf).
However, after daily fantasy football was introduced, which introduced weekly winnings of over one million dollars, fantasy football became less of a friendly competition. Now, many people consider this game as gambling, and believe that it should be banned. This would have an innumerable amount of negative affects, and a few positive ones. Fantasy football should be permitted, as long as regulations are upheld to maintain fair play. Being a large part in present American culture, fantasy football allows Americans to grasp a deeper sense in the sport of football.
On the other hand, though, many people believe that football should be banned in high school due to the many risks that come with playing the game. The game has a staggering statistic that says “Because of its violent nature and the sheer numbers of people who play, football is the leading cause of school sports injuries”(Safety). Many believe that just with this as a basis football in high school should be banned in high schools but it should also be noted that there is no sure way that concussions can be prevented. Here “Dr. Robert Cantu, the co-director of the Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy at the Boston University School of Medicine [believes that] ”(Reed) believes that “a young person’s brain is too vulnerable and no modernized helmet or altered playing rules can fully prevent concussions”(Reed).
In the 2015 NFL playoffs this was shown of how big the penalty could cost you when Bengal’s linebacker on purposely tried to injure star wide receiver for their rivals, Antonio Brown. The game was its final seconds and the Steelers were a good distance away. Vontaze Burfict the linebacker for the Bengals had a huge call for the same thing earlier in the game. He was mad at the refs so he decided to “get back” at the Steelers and tried to take out their best player. It back fired and gave the Steelers field goal range to kick the winning kick and later costed the linebacker the first 4 games of the next season.
There are estimated to be between 1.6 and 3.8 million sports related concussions in the United States every year (prevacious.com). Is there a way to stop this? Team doctors are responsible for the long term effects of concussions in football players. Most of the concussions are coming from football, the concussion rate is 64 to 76.8 and 33 percent of these injuries are happening in practiced and not in games (Headcasecpmpany.com). Most of these concussions are happening because they can 't defend themselves from the hard hits or the balls hitting them or just falling to the ground hard.
A recent poll taken by ESPN says that almost half of Americans are fans of pro football or the NFL. The NFL (National Football League) is comprised of 32 teams that compete head to head in attempt to achieve the goal of winning the super bowl. However more recently the game of football has been revealed to be more dangerous than originally thought. Autopsies of former NFL players are showing extensive brain damage that could have contributed to their deaths. Today as the game of football progresses into a passing game wide receivers and cornerbacks are taking more punishment and suffering more brain damage.
Concussions have always been a problem in contact sports. Unfortunately, high school football is no exception. In fact, high school football is the worst of all contact sports when dealing with concussions. According to “Sports Concussion Statistics,” 47% of all reported sports concussions occur during high school football. This is an alarming statistic that has caused companies like Riddell to search for a solution.
Little does the audience know, the players being hit is building up that damage to either break, develop, or lose something precious to them. The average tackle in the NFL is 95 g’s to a player, while to get a concussion, you only need 35 g’s of force. According to Fujita’s article ‘Would I let my son play football?’ it states “Once games start, football is football… There’s no doubt NFL players are bigger, faster, and stronger than they have ever been.” The players’ only goal is to win, no matter what it takes, and they will prepare for the win. All of the red flags thrown in a game means that the player played too
