Intervention (I): Counselor utilized active listening
Question 1: Interpersonal Communication Interpersonal communication is the interaction, between more than one person, in a verbal or nonverbal manner (Vuuren et al., 2014). The scene (from the video) consists of two people – in a relationship – having a dialogue which represents bad interpersonal communicational skills. There are several styles of communication being applied in the scene. The female demonstrates a passive behavior as seen by way in which she agrees to most of what the male says and suggests.
The two skills that I observe in the video three with the young male client were questioning and goal setting. The questioning skills was used to retrieve information from the client and to the client do some self-examination. The data receive will help the counselor determine what the underlying problem is. The goal setting skills was used to help the client set a goal, which he can achieve if he just thought about putting in a little more effort. The counselor was able to help the client by getting the client to clarify his goal.

Observation about the Group Dynamics The general group dynamic I observed during the class practice and presentation was that no one is willing to do the counselor. I believed that acting a counselor is very challenging for us, people who act as a counselor need to use many skills but if act as a group member can do what counselor said only, so people usually do not to be the counselor. And we always use some games to decide who was the counselor fairly, this was the way that we solve the problem.

Firstly, I need to identify the causes and formation of the difficulty situation of my client. I should not involve my own personal emotions when analysing the situation. Next, clarification of the situation is essential. The clients should figure out themselves on how to face the situation. An effective counsellor listen more than talks, and what they do say gives the client a sense of being heard and understood.
These skills are not only applicable in the counselling setting to form therapeutic relationship; they are also essential in daily life to convey information in a healthier way instead of finger pointing and blaming others, especially during conflict. To illustrate, the practice of “I” statements were especially useful in expressing my discomfort due to someone’s behaviour since it allowed me to convey my discomfort clearly while reducing the defensiveness of the person. Besides that, I used to have superficial relationship with others as I avoided touching on people’s inner feelings due to my fear of not providing any constructive feedback to resolve their issues. Nevertheless, this has taught me that conversations do not merely revolve around advice giving; by actively listening to others, that could also serve as the best form of support. In this semester, I have been exposed to the subject of Introduction to Guidance and Counselling which is a new field of study for me. After I have received this lesson, I can relate my experiences with what I have learned. Not only that, I also have different perspective towards after I learned this subject. The aspects that I can relate my experiences and thoughts with are the differences between advice, guidance and counselling as well as the goals of counselling.
