Going into my second week as an intern at the Department of Social Services, I begin to feel comfortable with different activities. One of the tasks completed this week was completing a Voucher Check Request Form for a client in need of purchasing a bicycle in order to have transportation back and forth to work. By completing this task, I was able to experience the process for requesting the materials clients need and finding the resources that are beneficial to his/her circumstances. There are four major components present when discussing multicultural competence: (1) the individual (me) must be aware of one’s own cultural views, (2) know one’s attitude towards cultural differences, (3) Knowledge of different cultural practices and worldviews, and (4) having cross-cultural skills (Adapted from class 2 and 3 definitions handout, as adapted from Pope, R.L. & Reynolds, A. Through an in-depth reading of many of the literature of international social work, we find it difficult to find a definition or a unified meaning of cultural competence, but nevertheless, I will try to shed light on the most important meanings of cultural competence concept.
The article, “ Identifying Thinking Skills for Instruction in Your Classroom,” written by Deborah E. Burns, addresses and explains the taxonomy of Thinking Skills by focusing on the four major thinking skill categories, including: Analytical Reasoning Skills, Critical Thinking Skills, Organizational Thinking Skills, and Creative Thinking Skills. In the article, Burns explains the purpose of the taxonomy was to identify, “thinking skills that were most frequently addressed in the professional literature and within the various thinking skills programs and materials” (Burns D.E., 1993). Burns uses the article to provide strategies and examples in order for educators to successfully implement the taxonomy and thinking skills in different classroom settings. The article provides multiple outlets to provide the stimulus needed to exercise the Thinking Skills highlighted in the article.
It is important to study something in school that you enjoy but that is also useful in the real world. I have always been asked, “what's your major?”. I would answer art history and always got a response like, “what are you going to do with that?”. Most parents and students don’t feel that there is a good foundation from learning Art History. It is often heard from high school and college students (influenced by their parents) that to succeed you must major in science, technology, engineering, or business. They think studying liberal arts is a future of unemployment and uncertainty. But, it is important to override these belief because of the large opportunity for art majors in the world. My experiences as a child, influences, and mentors have inspired me to study art history at Belmont and I want to share my experiences and knowledge of my process. There are plenty of standard practices that industry veterans continue to use, but most consulting firms view and define them differently. Each consultation job is a different case, and there’s no single process that works for every client.
