“The settler colonial logic of elimination in its crudest form, a violent rejection of all things Indian, was transformed into a paternalistic mode of governmentality which, though still sanctioned by state violence, came to focus on assimilation rather than rejection.” –Patrick Wolfe, After the Frontier: Separation and Absorption in US Indian Policy, 13 Wolfe’s statement illustrates how the US government put more emphasis on legalized absorption of Indians into the White society rather than using forceful and violent methods to acquire the Natives’ land. After the colonization of the westward land and the end of the Frontier era, the US government’s method of assimilation of the Indians started revolving around allotment and blood quanta. With no place to further push the Natives away, the established Bureau of Indian Affairs and the government took action to eliminate the Natives culturally and spiritually instead of physically.
“Coming of Age” In the book The Indian Peoples of Eastern America, James Axtell, the editor, gives us various amounts of different documents that explain the lives of the Indians. This gives us, the reader, an insight and perceptive of what it felt like to be an Indian during these hard times. Throughout this time, the Europeans had settled upon North America where the Indians had already founded and adapted upon their survivals.
After reading Native Americans and the “Middle Ground,” I realized how narratives of historians are quick to shame and blame Native Americans in history. This article begins by revealing how European settlement presented the Indians as obstacles. Recent historians, such as Gary Nash, show the Native Americans as being conquered by the Europeans. Author of The Middle Ground, Richard White, seems to be one of the first to examine the culture of Native Americans and the relationship between colonists. White writes about the “middle ground” of the politics and trade that is eventually established.
However, boarding schools specifically targeted the younger generation creating a more impactful lasting effect. As talked about in lecture, these children were taken from their homes and forced to completely disassociate themselves from tribal life. At these boarding schools, children were taught in and forced to speak English, which led them to forget their own language. Once done with school, if the children decided to go back home, they would often times not be able to communicate with their parents and grandparents because many Native Americans living on reservations didn’t know English. This ruined relationships and the transferring of culture through generations as children had no way of communicating and were never home to learn from their peers and environment about culture.
There has been several conflicts involving the United States such as the Mexican war, western Indian war, civil war, the cold war and several other wars. The Smithsonian goes through several of these wars. After looking through several of these conflicts I found the most interesting to be western Indian war. Indians were moved to reservations against their will, the Indians did try to fight back. However they were fighting in a battle that had already been lost.

The Native Americans suffered through many things especially when Americans wanted to “Americanize” them. Americans wanted to turn Native American into Americans people and teach them their ways and make them forget their ways. American believed that this would kill the Indian and save the man. Boarding schools were an attempt to “Americanize” Native American children. Americans believed that it was easier to manipulate children than older Indians.
I am writing this letter to tell you that me and couple of the men of the ship are doing fine, some of our men have died from hunger and from the ship crash that we’ve had recently, and here I am with the men in an island being welcomed by the native indians that helped us through. The native indians are extremely welcoming people in my point of view, they helped us when the ship crashed, they gave us food, water, and shelters for us to live in since we didn't have anything anymore. The native americans are the opposite of what I thought, when I saw them after the crash I thought they would kill us and sacrifice us to their gods, when actually they are celebrating and trying to fill us with happiness, instead of thinking about our lost of the ship. They are emotionally understanding people of what I've seen, they felt our sorrow and sadness of losing our ship from the recent occurring hurricane that led us to this island.
Cherokee, Cheyenne, Seminoles Option #2 During the nineteenth-century, the federal Indian policy changed and it forced the removal or relocation of many different Indian tribes. The federal government sought to expand its control of territory and resources across America. The one big problem the U.S. faced were the Indians who resisted their removal. Georgia signed the Compact of 1802 which stated that if Georgia were to give up their western claims, the U.S. would eradicate American Indian land titles in Georgia and remove them (Lecture 14).
The Sioux tribe was one of the most known powerful tribes living in which they originally came from Missouri in the 1800’s. Not to mention,many things happened when they came to Nebraska. During their early years, transportations are a way for them to follow the path of the buffalos,as a matter of fact, they had horses and built boats to keep them going. For example, they were also known to be farmers as well as hunters. The tribe made an influence on the Westward expansion and made war between the Americans,so many people wonder how the Americans influenced the tribe and where are they now.
Throughout the history of the United States, there generally have been dozens of particularly social movements, which is fairly significant. From the African American Civil Rights Movement in 1954 to the feminism movement in 1920, protests for all intents and purposes have helped these groups basically earn rights and fight injustice in a really major way. Some injustices that these groups face range from lack of voting rights to police brutality, or so they essentially thought. The indigenous people of North America aren’t actually immune to these injustices, basically contrary to popular belief. Back in the 1968, the American Indian Movement generally was formed to for all intents and purposes give natives security and peace of mind in a
Europeans had many effects on the area now known as Texas and on the Indians. Few if any of those effects were positive. The Conquistadors affected the people, the land, and caused the colonization of Texas. They had many motives for their deeds, converting the Indians to Christianity, finding cities of gold, or just claiming land. A Spanish conquistador named Cabeza de Vaca crashed into the mainland near Galveston in 1528 and began exploring the area now known as Texas.
When the Europeans began colonizing the New World, they had a problematic relationship with the Native Americans. The Europeans sought to control a land that the Natives inhabited all their lives. They came and decided to take whatever they wanted regardless of how it affected the Native Americans. They legislated several laws, such as the Indian Removal Act, to establish their authority. The Indian Removal Act had a negative impact on the Native Americans because they were driven away from their ancestral homes, forced to adopt a different lifestyle, and their journey westwards caused the deaths of many Native Americans.
government on the Native society was boarding schools that began in the late 19th century. Native children, as young as five years old, were taken from their families off the reservations thousands of miles away to boarding schools. One of those boarding schools was the Carlisle Industrial School, which opened in 1880, founded by Captain Richard Harry Pratt. The sole purpose of these schools was to assimilate the next generation of Native’s into the Anglo society. The boys were taught mechanical and agriculture skills, while the girls were taught domestic lessons such as sewing and cleaning.
Neither were the parents allowed to visit their children so the time the kids were finally able to go back with their family they started to become practically like strangers to each other because they knew very little about each other especially since many of the children were younger and had spent most of their lives in these school. The lack of communication between the Native American parents and children was another reason many parents weren’t aware of the trauma the kids were suffering in the homes. The kids were so affected they remember that even at night when they were left alone to sleep they were all so quiet and no one talked about what was happening to them. The native children didn’t have normal childhoods they didn’t play or interact with each other this alone shows how affected they were with the boarding
