Book Review: The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey
In The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey, Cassie Sullivan tries to survive the 5th Wave, while trying to rescue her five-year-old brother, Sammy, from a military compound run by The Others. These five waves have been run by a group of aliens called, The Others, who have been trying to inhabit Earth. Cassie is trying to go to the compound, Camp Haven, where The Others are putting their plan (The 5th Wave) into action. At the camp, young people like Sammy are brainwashed into believing that The Others are human. In this way, an army of children is being trained as the instrument of humanity’s destruction.

It seems like a foolproof plan for victory. As Cassie states, “You can’t band together to fight without trust. And without trust, there was no hope” (Yancey pg. 1).
Quote: “The first rule of surviving the 4th Wave is don’t trust anyone. It doesn’t matter what they look like. The Others are very smart about that—okay, they’re smart about everything. It doesn’t matter if they look the right way and say the right things and act exactly like you expect them to act” (Yancey Mobile Page 8).
Setting
This novel takes place in present day, but in a world where alien invaders are systematically annihilating the human race. The action takes place in Ohio, in and around Cincinnati.
Quote: “I begin to smell Cincinnati about a mile before spotting the exit sign. A thick column of smoke rises lazily toward the cloud-less sky. Cincinnati is burning” (Yancey Mobile Page

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes action and adventure.
Symbols & Objects
Crucifix
A wounded soldier Cassie comes into contact with has a crucifix that Cassie mistakes for a gun, leading her to kill the man. This Crucifix empowers Cassie to strive forward to what she wants to get—her brother, Sammy.
Quote: “I went up to him before the last of the light was gone. Not to see if he was dead. I knew he was dead. I wanted to see what he was still holding in his bloody hand. It was a crucifix” (Yancey Mobile Page 14).
Teddy Bear
Sammy gives Cassie his teddy bear to keep her spirits up while they are separated. Cassie keeps the teddy bear with her and returns it to Sammy when she goes to rescue him.
Quote: “Sammy’s ratty old teddy bear. Not that it’s mine now. Not that I ever cuddle with it or anything” (Yancey Mobile Page 17).
Figurative Language
Quote: “The Others are so far ahead of us, it’s like comparing the dumbest human and the smartest dog” (Yancey pg.1).
Explanation: This is a simile because it is comparing the dumbest human and the smartest
Abstract: In a hot summer, an 11-year-old black boy, first loses faith and then hope: that is how Anthony Grooms depicts the life of Walter Burke in Birmingham, Alabama in his novel Bombingham. The novel begins with Walter Burke – the protagonist – who is drafted to be a soldier in Vietnam War. When he loses his friend Haywood in the minefield, he decides to write a letter to his parents as promised. However, his attempts to write a letter reveal the flashbacks of his summer in 1963 in Birmingham, during the Civil Rights Movements and 16th Street Baptist Church bombing.
In Bless the Beasts and the Children, the Bedwetters is a group of young boys who are misfits in society and who have been neglected by their parents. They have been sent to a camp in Arizona that promises the parents that the boys will be transformed into “real men” (Swarthout, 1970). Everyone in the camp soon realizes that Cotton, the leader, and his gang are troublemakers. More conflicts develop because the boys’ need for constant attention takes away others’ fun camp experience.
The hopelessness, the fear, the death, and the horrific violence of the camp. The counting of each day one lives; the counting of another day of survival. The slow, eliminating of each the innocent villagers one by one, every day. The lack of sufficient food, and the mortifying fear of starvation. The vile, watery soup and the stagnant, stale bread that they are fed every day.
In "Outliers: The story of success", Malcom Gladwell explained and gave examples of ways to be successful. There are many ways that Gladwell mentioned, such as luck, practice, background, family, and culture. There are many more of course, but I will save time. There are three of which I think are the most important, these being Intelligence, Social Skills, and Location; and these are explanations as to why I think these are the most important.
She remains calm in order to gain the trust of Hale, and in an attempt to reach her ulterior goal of returning the town back to its orderly and tranquil past. Often times trust is one of the fundamental bases to a functioning society. During the Red Scare in America, few individuals trusted one another, and the country as a whole erupted into chaos, but over time, Americans began to trust one another again, illustrating how trust can bring a frantic society back to
In the chapter titled "Travels", The RZA writes about how being around wise people helps one learn and gain knowledge from each other. He personally is open to learning new things from the people he meets and because of that the RZA in the Wu-Tang clan is known as a teacher. The RZA believes that no one stops learning in life even if their teachers. This is made clear when the RZA states, "But a real teacher is also a student, someone who never stops learning"(7). This quote shows that the RZA believes that a real teacher is not just a teacher they are also students because they never stop learning new information or life lessons gained through experiences in life.
Government Control Everyone has felt smarter or maybe not so smart, due to others intelligence once in their lifetime. In a world full of different people this can happen often. However, what if there were a world where everyone was equal? No person was smarter than the other, and everyone had the same level of intelligence. In the movie, Harrison Bergeron, he is a very gifted boy who is against a “government” that makes the entire society equal by handicapping the more gifted, down to the level of the less fortunate or incapable.(Bruce “Harrison”)
Humans in general, often times desire something that they don’t possess. For instance, in the short story “A&P”, the protagonist, Sammy, works at the A&P and notices three girls walking into the store with nothing but bikinis. Over the course of the story, Sammy observes the “main” girl, Queenie, and her friends and eventually, quits his job when the manager tells the girls to follow store policy for wearing bikini-clad clothing. In the end, Sammy is left jobless and empty handed with the girl, Queenie, and is then pondering about the future. Overall, Sammy’s desire for Queenie and him advocating for her due to her clothing led him to be somewhat of a hero.
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be living your life in fear? Constantly being wanted, and living on the run and in fear only because you are a divergent? I have read the chapters 1-27 in the book Insurgent, in the beginning Tris and Tobias were on their way away from the city and away from the erudite, who were taking control. After they find out that the erudite are searching for them, they decide to take a train back to the center of the city and stay in the warehouse with a bunch of other divergent.
It 's a jaw-dropping book that will leave you wanting more as the author Laurie writes in a crisp and clear way describing the young girl Melinda’s horrific story and how it unfolds. The author 's tone gives off the vibe of a young frighted girl which I find really enhances this sad, but exhilarating story. This story taught me to always speak up for myself and to never let anyone take advantage of me. I would recommend this novel because it is extremely detailed, painting vivid pictures in your mind that really help to magnify and
Within the novel characters are stripped of their human identity. Soldiers are forced to be naked and bare, and pornography or sexual dialogue plagues the interactions between many of the characters. These individuals are then forced to evolve into a new being, whether that be from a teacher to a soldier, or a porn star to a
To Jonathan, he was stunned and confused, but accepted the gift thinking, “I did not know what to do, for, as an English Churchman, I have been taught to regard such things as in some measure idolatrous, and yet it seemed so ungracious to refuse an old lady meaning, so well and in such a state of mind” (Stoker, 8). After going through torments from the Count, Jonathan then found a comfort in the symbol that the old lady had placed around his neck thinking, “Bless that good, good woman who hung the crucifix round my neck! For it is a comfort and a strength to me whenever I touch it” (Stoker, p.41). Through his faith in the symbol and its meaning, he gained the power to take action in defeating
The characters in this book are Lucy (main character), Sarah, Zach, Gray, Miranda, Leo, and Soledad. My favorite character of the book is Lucy Scarborough, because her character overcomes many tasks, and she shows her strength and compassion throughout the story. The author unfolds the story by starting from the beginning of Lucy’s fate. Miranda Lucy’s biological mother fell into insanity when Lucy was born due to a curse that runs through Lucy’s family that only her and her foster parents know about.
There is something ingrained in humans that even when people lose their sanity and their emotions go insane, most humans still feel the need to protect the other. People can go into a war as enemies, but when dangerous situations come, trust must be built, even if it is
