This environmental disaster turned soil to dust that winds picked up and spread into dark clouds over the dry regions. Thus, creating suffer endearing conditions for families, their horses, and cattle. In The Worst Hard Time, Timothy Egan describes the affected areas and shares the tragic stories of settlers who lived through this time of suffering. Though this devastation is widely viewed as a horrible climatic event, it is important to understand the human ignorance largely responsible for causing the suffered disaster.
Dust Bowl, The Southern Plains in the 30’s written by Donald Worster and published in 1979, is an informative text on the Great Plains during the Great Depression. Donald Worster is a credible author because he not only earned a Ph.D. from Yale in environmental history, but he also had previously written a book on the environment and the economy. This book was written well and Worster did a good job of revealing how people and how they live have effected the areas environment. He spoke of places including, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas and many more.
Worster skillfully describes the various issues and lays out his argument with valid reasoning throughout his book. His argument is that the Dust Bowl was the result of the lack of ecological sensitivity and the oblivious outlooks
The failure to apply dry land farming was also a factor in these dust storms. These storms affected thousands of families, forcing them to leave their homes. Many of these families moved to California to learn that the Great Depression had left the economic conditions there, close to the same they had left. The people that didn't go to California found a place to hide or died from inhaling the dust. The majority that died from inhaling the dust were infants or teens.
During the 1930’s thousands of Dust Bowl migrant workers made their way from the central plain into California seeking work. In their search for work and some form of income many of the migrants and their families ended up in Hoovervilles, which were makeshift roadside camps that were greatly impoverished. Steinbeck was able to travel through the labor camps and recorded the horrible living conditions of the migrant workers. The collection of these recordings was published as Harvest Gypsies. During the tours of the labor camps he saw the oppression of the workers first hand in addition to workers being demoralized by wealthy land owners.

In The Worst Hard Time (Houghton Mifflin, 2006), Timothy Egan tells the stories of the people who survived the Dust Bowl. Dust storms swept across Americas High Plains during The Depression and many fled but Egan tells the stories of those who stayed and survived. Egan believes that the time that dust storms were happening was the literal “worst hard time”. Egan also believes that the dust storms played a large role in The Great Depression and that it was like nothing ever seen before. Egan shows how the dust storms were a great human and ecological disaster.
