I conducted a telephone interview with Tammy Hubert the morning of Thursday, October 29, 2015. She works at a local Portland agency called, Central City Concern. The agency is a large company and has numerous services to offer the community. Tammy works in the CCC Recovery Center. Working at Central City Concern is a newer job position for her as she was just hired with the company in June of this year. However, she has over five years in this field. Previously to this current job she was working in residential treatment for three years. Additionally, she worked with De Paul for the two years prior. Tammy is a certified alcohol and drug counselor. This is a requirement for her position along with additional agency training. She holds the CDC2 …show more content…
Back in the 1970’s the City of Portland and Multnomah County recognized a neighborhood called Portland’s Old Town/Chinatown which had high crime and alcohol problems. They responded to this problem area by creating an organization called Burnside Consortium (later changed to Central City Concern) which administer a public inebriate grant. Initially they offered alcohol recovery treatment and affordable housing solutions. During the 1980’s the organization added recovery support to crack cocaine and heroin users. In the 1990’s the agency wanted to further support client needs and self-sufficiency so they added training and work opportunity programs (Central City Concern, …show more content…
112). The textbook describes the mission of this model as, “…to promote physical and mental health and prevent disease, injury, and disability” (p. 112). Due to the changing concept of public health the model has also changed over time. Furthermore the textbook describes, “…a more positive meaning – the capacity to live fully, which entails maintaining the physical, mental, and social reserves for coping with life’s circumstances in a way that brings satisfaction” (p. 112). Tammy describes her agency, Central City Concern as using the public health model. They take in full consideration of each individuals needs which includes having a medical clinic, mental health clinic, addiction services, and housing. The treatment is focused on the entire person, not just one need or
In her review of Supersizing Urban America by Chin Jou, titled “'Supersizing Urban America': How U.S. Policies Encouraged Fast Food To Spread”, Tove Danovich discusses the arching topic of national policy and the effect it had with Americans waistbands. Danovich reaches the conclusion the source of the abundance of fast food in underdeveloped communities can be traced back to the 1960s race riots and the formation of the Small Business Association. I, on the other hand, hypothesize it can be trailed back to the end of WWII and the G.I. Bill. In my analysis of her essay, I conclude the government's response to racial inequality lead to the rise of fast food franchises and obesity in low income neighborhoods.
If you had been a reformer during this era (remember planning as a profession did not yet exist), what type of progressive era urban reform would you adopt and implement? Why? Would it engage with the good government movement or not? Why? What lessons, if any, would your response then provide for your planning practice today?

In the United States our government is broken up into many different parts. The biggest is of course the national government. The national government is comprised of the Executive branch, Legislative branch, and Judicial branch. These three compartments of government work together to approve the laws, make the laws, and enforce the law. After that power is trickled down to the state and local government.
Excellent post Jose! The city of Mukilteo appears to have other problems in addition to a lack of internal controls there seems to be a sense of coercive power at work here. Interestingly, the inner workings of city leadership can be wonderful or corrupt. Often citizens in positions of city and county government offices simply decide that items issues not deemed to promote their future political ambitions should not be budgeted for. Moreover, someone with decision making power for this city likely decided that funds should be spent elsewhere rather than investing in ensuring proper accounting procedures were followed.
Twin City was incorporated in 1921, gets its name from the combining of two adjacent cities they are Graymont and Summit. Twin City began as two towns, Summit and Graymont, which merged in 1921 to survive the effects of the Great Depression. The small town of Summit began in 1886 with the construction of the Rogers and the Summit Railroad (Now the Millen Southwestern Railroad) and was incorporated in 1898. The town of Graymount established in 1896 and incorporated in 1900, was located one-mile from summit and had its own depot and post office. The two small towns of Summit and Graymount were incorporated into one town called Twin City in 1921 by an act of the Georgia legislature.

Political dimensions of the urban policy dilemma: The political dilemma is whether the government should take responsibility for the lack of affordable housing, and to what extent the government should intervene in social conflicts. There is the conservative argument that homelessness is inevitable, and that government should be more hands off. For instance, the homeless are heavily dependent on welfare, and on governmental institutions, which is a burden for taxpayers that have no relationship to the homeless population.

The public health model is more difficult to define than the other two models due to not everyone understands the concept of public health. The public health model is concerned with individuals’ who have problems but extends the concept of health care beyond just the normal medical treatment due to individuals problems may be linked to social issues as well (Woodside & McClam, 2015). The public health model looks at larger populations and not just individuals by actually collecting data and examining this data to determine the overall problem (Woodside & McClam, 2015). By collecting and examining this data the public health model is used to alleviate health problems that have consequences for society in general, like health insurance for
Leadership and governance (Governance and Health Care Financing) • To strengthen leadership and governance systems, in order to ensure highest standards of transparency and accountability at all levels. (National Health Strategic Plan 2006-10), (National Health Strategic Plan 2011-14) c) Explain how the four approaches of Public health could be used to attain the objectives outlined in b). Public health is the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life, and promoting health through organized efforts of society - The Acheson Report (1988) Therefore, the public health approach principles provide a useful framework for investigating and understanding the causes and effects of Health related conditions and for planning there mitigation interventions through primary prevention programmes, policy interventions and advocacy. This public health approach to prevention seeks to improve the health and safety of all individuals by addressing underlying risk factors that increase the likelihood that an individual will become vulnerable to these health conditions.
Within Triumph of the City, Glaeser refers to San Francisco as an urban star because the city, invests in education, has diverse industries, and the ability attract poor, which he claims make cities successful. While San Francisco can be considered successful because it reflects those qualities, it also falls short within those same qualities because of the presence of achievement gaps, automation of unskilled labor, and high labor costs. I. Value of Investing in Education San Francisco’s investments in education increase its human capital which in turn allows for socioeconomic mobility of its inhabitance. Glaeser states that for a single worker an additional year of schooling correlates with an 8% increase in income. (48)

Describe how two or more concepts of Modeling and Role-Modeling can be used to address health concerns at a community level. Applying the concept of modeling and role modeling at the community level is very helpful in promoting and improving the health of the population. Unconditional acceptance is a must-have tool for anyone dealing with diverse populations. Accepting and respecting the community the way we meet them and avoid any bias or judgment will help to build trust between nurses and the targeted group in the community.
