I have always, like my dad, wanted to major in something in the medical field. Another reason why I want to become a nurse practitioner is that I have always had a passion about helping others. With this job I can communicate with the patients in their times of intense physical and mental sufferings. For example, If my patients are scared of getting a surgery, I could educate them that surgery is not always a bad choice. I started working in the health care field five years ago as a CNA. My goals have changed slightly as I have been in school. I now want to become a Nurse Practitioner. My plan is to finish at York County with a Health Studies Associate and then move onto my BSN than to an NP. The challenges I face while on this journey is exhaustion. I work over-time every week and I sleep a max of three hours most of the time. I have support from family and friends. They watch my wonderful nine month old son while I’m away. My childhood initiated a desire to help prevent and mitigate injury or illness; this soon flourished into an interest in the health care field. To help narrow my choices I explored as many science courses as I could. Talking with health care professionals and reading nursing textbooks I found in my aunt’s house piqued my interest in the nursing field and patient care. By being an anesthesiologist, one can get paid well and save lives, but first one has to be successful. My future career objective is to become an Anesthesiologist. Anesthesiologist play an important role in patients which are undergoing surgery or any other medical procedure. They often included in the process before, during, and after the procedure by determining the exact appropriate amount of anesthesia a patient receives. During surgery, it is essential that they monitor a patient’s overall health and the reaction the patient gives off to the anesthetic that is given. A typical day for an Anesthesiologist revolves around a busy schedule. At times Anesthesiologist may follow a daily planned routine, while in other occasions it might be filled with chaos due to the unexpected factor found in any medical field related career. There will always be a need for a skilled certified nursing assistants, whether it is in a hospital or in a nursing home. Being a CNA, there is a lot to take on and deal with; this type of job you have to be ready physically, emotionally, and mentally. There will always be a need for a skilled nursing assistants at a hospital or nursing homes. All of the job responsibilities a CNA is required to complete can wear you out, but when you get to see that the patient having trust in you and feeling confident that you know what is best for them, is its own reward. There are some people who do not know what a CNA does and the lack of knowledge may result in them believing that they are not an important member to the health care team. The thing that

Nursing, and everything that it entails, cannot be easily described in just one simple word or phrase. It goes beyond the meaning of a profession and the stereotypical definition of treating the ill. Nursing is the “protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations” (American Nurses Association, 2010, p. 1). Therefore, it is a career that requires dedication, passion, critical thinking, and knowledge. It demands commitment and an understanding of its core values and concepts, as well as the nurse’s own personal philosophy and principles.

For example, I could become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist or CRNA for short. Furthermore, a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, is another career I am undoubtedly fascinated by. CRNAs are nurses who work in collaboration with surgeons, dentists, or any other doctor in need of a helping hand for administering anesthesia. Each day is different for these nurses because it depends on where they work and each patient; having a new experience every day sounds exciting and I know I would enjoy meeting all types of new people. CRNAs could work in hospitals, dentist offices, or even in the military. Compared to a pharmacist, CRNAs receive more hands-on experience with their patients. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists are one of the main providers of anesthesia for procedures today (“Nurse Anesthetists, Nurse Midwives, and Nurse Practitioners”). The Bureau of Labor Statistics also states that the median annual salary of a CRNA is $107,460 (“29-1151 Nurse Anesthetists”). This salary is more than substantial enough for my future that I plan to have. Another reason I want to become a CRNA is that I could start my own company and hire myself out to hospitals and then I become my own boss, which is a perk in of itself. Overall, becoming a certified registered nurse anesthetist would give me multitudinous opportunities to further myself and to help
