The eating habit of our ancestors would be completely unrecognizable to many of us nowadays. We graze our way through the day, eating on crisps or chocolate and drinking sodas to keep us going. In the article “Remark to the NAACP National Convention” speaker Michele Obama speaks the participant of NAACP to promote fitness and better eating in a campaign against childhood obesity called “Let’s move”.
Young Kids, Old Bodies talks about obesity and its growing problem. Along with insightful article, the visual representation shows: ill effect of obesity, percentile of obese girls versus boys based on race and how physical activity helps children avoid obesity. According to the visual aid on the article, obesity leads to malfunction of various internal organs and diseases. One of the many effects of fatty tissues is heart attack due to thickening of arteries (Parks, Young Kids, Old Bodies).
Studies from the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, more than half of adults are overweight or obese and nearly one in five kindergarten students are obese (Doc A). Most overweight children usually have parents that are obese. The problem is that when parents do not eat right, neither do their children. Because, children eat what their parents cook. It is very important for the government to control what is consumed by kids.
Firstly, childhood obesity is classified as a serious medical condition that occurs when a child is well above the normal weight for his or her age and height. Roughly 9 million children above the age of 6 in America
a massive financial burden to fulfill. While much of the expenses are covered by government policy, this still leaves many Hispanics in low income more dangerous neighborhoods. Unsafe neighborhoods and parks result in a lack of safe places for children to get the necessary physical activity they need. An insufficient amount of physical activity is one of the leading causes of obesity in children. As mentioned earlier, schools are majorly affected by the obesity rates in children.
Child obesity is not advertised like the lastest chicken nugget meal, which need to be addressed. There has been a rapid growth in child obesity worldwide. It has now caused a major problem in the health of young children. Center for Diseases Control took a survey in 2011 to 2014, showing that 12.7 million are being affected from the ages of 2 - 19 years old. Fast food restaurants are advertising in children show commercials.
Kids gain weight from just sitting around and doing nothing. Kids these days sit in school and get no exercise and at home, they just sit on electronics and do nothing. One piece of evidence is exercise is good. Many kids deal with obesity, but even kids at good weight levels gain from activity, and need it for good health. The outdoors is the best for children to lose weight, practice physical skills and get the pure happiness of movement.
Obesity has become a major dilemma within America, mostly childhood obesity which has become in my eyes an epidemic. Childhood obesity will bring about adult obesity, health issues, psychological problems, and will even damper on sociological issues when pertaining to relating to culture and other people on a daily basis ( ex: brings about bullying or being bullied, social issues with kids, and low self-esteem and confidence). These include but never restricted to the fact of physical, social, environmental, psychological, and health issues all within a wider scale mostly if the pattern of obesity starts at an early age and then progress to adolescence and adulthood. The factors given in obesity has once again become a worldwide issue and concern for family, friends, and the child.
In a western society that continuous to renounce communalism and embrace individualism, it is easily noticed that the problems faced by few are ignored by the many. This ignorance, intentional or not, is allowing communal problems to accelerate the pace. However, the issue at hand is one that affects you whether or not you are aware of it; if you are an American, or in any western society for that matter. It affects nearly twenty percent of the under eighteen population in the United States and costs taxpayers on average 14 billion dollars per year. As a Parent, it can tack $19,000 onto the total of raising each child.
Obesity: There is a direct link between young children’s eating habits and them becoming overweight and obese later on. Children in families with insufficient access to nutritious foods are in fact significantly more likely to be obese in early childhood than other children. This is the result of excessive calorie intake and an emphasis on foods that have high levels of fat, sugar and sodium.
