The Union and Confederacy both had to go through tough times to fight for what they want. Both sides in the Civil War had advantages that made only one that was more prepared. The Union was most likely prepared due to better areas during the war. The Union and Confederates were both fighting for a cause, but the Union had the better building blocks of maintaining the war.
