The advancement in modern science has lead to a breakthrough in genetic research. The use of this knowledge of genetics has now been used in more and more everyday things such as our food. According to the World Health Organisation(WHO) , “GMOs can be defined as organisms in which the genetic material has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally by mating and/or natural recombination”(WHO 2014).Genetically modified foods where created and marketed to combat plant diseases and insects that affect crops. It is also used in order to make food more resistant to herbicides to make using weed killers less harmful to the crops and difficult farming conditions such as drought stricken areas. With our population rapidly increasing the food supply might fail to keep up with demand and with a consumerist society a lot of people want an excess of food and so GMOs have been used to greatly increase the crop yield as well as to help plants combat unpredictable climate change . A lot of people that buy and eat GMOs are unaware that they are doing so. A lot of staple foods are genetic ally modified, the reasons why shall be discussed later on . Corn is one of the most common foods to be genetically modified in fact according to Huffpost “almost 85 percent of corn grown in the U.S is genetically Modified” ( Huffpost 2014) .Milk , soybeans …show more content…

GMOs mean that countries that have difficulty growing crops due to the difficult farming conditions will now be able to grow crops with less difficulty . GMO crops will be able to withstand more severe conditions such as droughts . GMOs can add nutritional value to crops which would enable people in poorer countries to get more nutrients from less food . It can also decrease the use of pesticides as some GMOs are made to be resistant to insects. GMOs usually have a greater yield than non- GMO and so can help lower the starvation rate as well as make food
