My Island’s faith is special
I really like my island and our traditions. I can say this with more certainty, because when we lose something in life we give it due value.
Unfortunately at the age of 17 I had to take a break from my studies and start working because I needed more money for myself and to help my family. My first job was in Ponta Delgada (a 6-month contract), but then I decided to risk traveling to Lisbon at the age of 18 to get a better job while I was studying at night.
Fortunately, when I got there I had a cousin, who helped me and letting me stay in her house. In Lisbon everything seemed new: the people, the places, the store products, the traditions and of course the accent.
While I worked in ‘’the University City’’ (Lisbon), I met several people,

The poor lady couldn’t get up and what the locals did was to get around that lady and move on. I ended up helping her and she asked: "Are you from here?" And laughed and said, "I'm not, and I don’t really like being."
After this sad episode and many others, I just wanted to return to S. Miguel. Besides, one big reason why I traveled was because my grandmother got sick. At that moment I had a good job, but my heart throbbed for listening again our beautiful Azorean accent. So I decided to travel to Ponta Delgada to visit my grandmother Margarida and my aunt Ana, two days before the biggest festival of my island: the celebrations of Christ of the Miracles. When I got home, my grandmother insisted to be in the procession for her. So I went.
This festival has a pure external aspect, where is to be found an atmosphere of profound spiritual devotion. This environment began to be noticed when I arrived at the Campo de S.Francisco and even more when I entered the great gates of the chapel, where Mass was
She says that the group struggled to figure out whether Cerda was “Tejano or Mexicano” (6) and that he spoke with a mixture of Spanish and English. He introduces himself to the group in a rude manner and says “I don’t want to know where you’re from or where you’re going. I don’t expect to hear anything about except your pinche name” (7). Then, as the journey went along we eventually had a shift in point of view to tell Cerda’s story. This shift starts with Cerda asking “was I Tejano or Mexicano?” and went on to say “I spoke English and Spanish, but most of the time I didn't even know how I was talking” (114).
Once World War I came to a resolution, the United States began to industrialize. The Americans had discovered new technology and started a new era. The people of the middle class were amazed by the new advancements that were being created. We had advanced in transportation, communication, and manufacturing. Leisure time in the 1920’s also included going to the beach, sporting events, and Coney Island.
Hello, are you doing, fine without me? I am doing fine with my new job. Currently we are stopping nearby the island of Hawaii. We came here whaling to restock the supplies and to rebuild our food supplies, because recently we’ve only eaten 2 pieces of crackers. Sorry for not following your warnings, but I really wanted to start my dream job.
One day on May 2nd 1920, I Matt winiker went on a boat ride to unmarked territory with my two brothers. The last thing I remember is that on June 1st my boat crashed somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean. Now I am stranded on this damp, wet, muddy, island looking for my brothers. All I have now is a machete and a flare gun.
In Small Island, Hortense is ridiculed in London by the host society for her aspirations despite being a Black woman. Hortense trained as a teacher in Jamaica and ‘was the talk of the college for several weeks.’ Hortense’s privileged upbringing is a reflection of her high hopes for England and the educational advantages she feels she will be entitled to in Britain. Although, Hortense is well-respected feelings of superiority often interject Hortense’s outlook on the opportunities available to her in Britain. Thus, she is alienated in the British educational system due to institutionalised racism and nowhere will hire her because she is black.

Growing up in Hawaii, the idea of community was always such a fundamental part of who I was. I have never looked at it from the perspective of how it benefited me rather how it benefitted everyone around me. Everything I have done from joining local clubs that enriched the Hawaiian culture to volunteering with the west Hawaii special olympics program have helped me become the person I am today. My family has had a huge role in making sure that I am involved with the community. They passed down their practices in paddling, environmental conservation of Kealakekua Bay and encouraging the people who need it the most.
In Central America, some parents leave their children, and set out a journey to the United States in hopes of making a better life for them. In the book by Sonia Nazario titled Enrique’s Journey, author Nazario writes about how a young Honduran boy goes on a journey to find his mother, Lourdes, who had left him when he was just a child. As Enrique is growing up, he assumes that she went to the U.S to make her life better, but in reality, she is working extremely hard to make a life for her two children she left behind. Enrique feels a sense of loneliness, and believes that no one truly loves him. He spent most of his time living with his grandma, until he started to do drugs and come home late.
When I was younger, I never felt out of place. I didn't even know what out of place was, I was always just me. When asked where I was from, I would always say America, obviously. I never regarded my Cuban culture and I resented the fact that I didn't look like the blonde, blue-eyed actresses that dominated the media. As I got older I started appreciating my Hispanic roots more, but I still didn't feel like I truly belonged anywhere.
(pg. 8, Delgado, Kevin) All popular religions have a main location where people often pilgrimage to, where they can pay their respect to highly respected elders, and visit sacred natural locations. We see an example of this when we talked about the sacred Ceiba tree in Cuba, as followers of Santeria often pay homage to it. With this idea of Santeria being more “pure” in Cuba than in other countries, Santeria is gaining an “authenticity” that validates it as a religious practice and is losing its association as a demonized, evil practice among those who know nothing of its
Over the years of fitting in, she enjoyed her independence but believed it “…didn’t have to be an exile…” (Alvarez 1304) from her native ways. In regaining her identity, she believes she must reconnect with her favorite childhood “…antojos, guavas…” (Alvarez 1300). In finding and eating the guavas, it is her way of reconnecting with her family and calling back the memories of the once Dominican
An Exquisite Equation Below the worn pavement and below thousands of footsteps, an unsuspecting terminal of tracks exists. The stagnant air of pungent aromas is filtered when the bullets carrying passengers glide by. The train station resembled a beehive; determined individuals zipping through rows of chairs to catch their ride while others frantically search for an exit. Past the makeshift shops that attempt to welcome the tourists, an outlet of steep stairs ascend. A strange phenomena seems to wash over as toes lift off the top step and heels collide with the rough sidewalk, introducing a feeling as if you’ve just teleported into a foreign world.

The Hawaiian Islands are an incredible place to visit and explore. I have visited there twice now, and the sights are amazing. This assignment came up right after I got back from my last trip, and one thing that had my interest while I was there was the islands’ formations. Flying in the first time, I enjoyed being able to see the islands come into view after being over water for 6 hours. Doing snorkeling adventures, I visited Molokini Crater.
