Diwali, in most places known as the festival of lights, is one of the most famous and biggest Hindu festivals. Hindus and Indians are the people that mainly celebrate it, but there are also many other people from different religions that celebrate it all across the world. In many parts of India, Diwali is also called Dipavali, which in Sanskrit means ‘row of lights’. Whenever you think of this festival, you think of people decorating their houses with lights, lamps, and lighting firecrackers. Most Indians do that because they believe that during this time one of the gods called Lakshmi comes to people’s homes. Lakshmi is known as the goddess of wealth, and the lights and firecrackers are the things that help her get to people’s houses. People also believe that during this time good returned after defeating the evil. Ram and Sita (Hindu gods) were the gods that returned after beating the evil ten-headed-god Ravana. Most people call the first day Dhantheras, but some people also call it Danvantari or Dhawantari Triodasi. This is a full moon night, and it is a belief that on this day one of the gods came to give the people Ayurvedic or herbal medicines. The second day is of the five Diwali days is Choti Diwali, and on this day people bathe and rest because they the next day will be the main day. Choti Diwali can also be thought of something like Diwali Eve because it is the day before the main Diwali day. The third and main day of the Diwali week is the actual Diwali day. On this day, people pray to the goddess of wealth called Lakshmi, and eat the traditional foods. On the fourth day the people have another puja, and on the fifth day it is Bhai Duj. On this day all of the brother meet their sisters and wish for their happiness.
