Housing development in Ghana has increased due to the rapid population growth and urbanization. Amidst the increasing residential development is the changing house types from multi-family, multi-storey housing to single-family, single-storey housing. The research, therefore, seeks to identify the changing house types and the factors that are influencing such shift. Findings from the study provided that, indeed housing types are changing from multi-family, multi-storey housing to single-family, single-storey housing, however, the recent development of multi-family, multi-storey houses have been transformed to suit the prevailing needs of households in the form of flats and apartments, characterized by the private use of housing facilities and services. The factors for the changing house types were mainly due to lack of peace and privacy in compound houses and the need to provide housing security for the nuclear family members. These housing types based on Tipple, et al. (1999) study dominated more in the cities like Kumasi. Influenced by the extended family system, the compound housing units were built for the enjoyment of the extended family members and for rental accommodation that benefited the low-income households in many cities in Ghana (Asante, et al., 2014). The housing units were characterized by different households occupying one or two rooms in the house of which most are extended family members. According to Wojtkun (2008), multi-family dwelling also referred to as a corporate housing or multi-habitation is an ancient housing strategy and for many decades, most households in Ghana knows of this housing type. However, recently building of multi-family housing in the form of the compound has been replaced with single-family, single-storey housing
After all, architects typically constructed the projects to include a diverse possibility of uses, while tenements merely sought to maximize tenants. Bauman et. al. describe the Richard Allen Homes as matching the style of the surrounding North Philadelphia buildings and featuring “a community building, housing management offices, workshops, a nursery, an auditorium, and grassy courts planted with trees and shrubbery” (Bauman et. al. 274).
Now, however, it is known as “the housing of last resort” by its critics. This outlook by many degrades the program, as well as its residents, to a secondary status in the eyes of policy makers, government officials, and public as a whole. Public housing developments look isolated from the rest of the city due to signs of deterioration like deserted properties, empty lots, abandoned commercial strips, and vacant factories. This unfortunate condition goes against the drive for self-sufficiency and empowerment among the poor, mainly in developments of public housing (Chandler,

Homelessness is one the most ignored problems in the United States with citizen and politician. Homeless people are walked by and ignored. Nobody ever thinks that they will be homeless. Due to the economy, people live paycheck to paycheck making house payments very difficult. Most people will want to believe most homeless people are drug addicts or alcoholics, but most people will be surprise to know that it is no all true.
When Habitat for Humanity was first constructed, the goal was to create housing for misfortunate families and individuals without any form of government funding. However, through the Self-Help Homeownership Opportunity Program (SHOP), the Capacity Building for Community Development and Affordable Housing grant, and the Home Investment Partnership Program (HOME), Habitat for Humanity has been able to allocate over $370 million dollars solely for the purpose of building housing for those in need. From this, the mission of Habitat for Humanities is to provide anyone in need of safe, durable housing a decent shelter in a decent community, regardless of cost, background, and/or financial status. However, most homes built by the organization are constructed for families pitted by low-income or homelessness. According to author Christina Smith, “Habitat affiliates built or rehabilitated 4,970 homes across the United States…and HFHI is currently ranked as the 18th-largest nonprofit organization in America” (Smith 95).
Public Policy on Housing Discrimination Executive Summary Housing discrimination and segregation have long been present in the American society (Lamb and Wilk). The ideals of public housing and home buying have always been intertwined with the social and political transformation of America, especially in terms of segregation and inequality of capital and race (Wyly, Ponder and Nettking). Nevertheless, the recent unrest in Ferguson, Missouri and in Baltimore due to alleged police misconduct resulting to deaths of black men brought light on the impoverished conditions in urban counties in America (Lemons). This brings questions to the effectiveness of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in devising more fair-housing facilities (Jost).
According to Preserving Affordable Housing is Green (2008), affordable housing during the renovation process creates healthier living environments. It resolves a big number of slums in many cities in the universe such as Dharabi in Mumbai, Kibera in Kenya and Kadwe in Zambia where lack of good condition and serious unsanitary. By this way, affordable housing receives positive idea such as “If construct affordable housing, then the remainder of the slum can be raised. This could change the whole lifestyle of Kibera” (Lunami, n.d.). Also, affordable housing always has sewerage system, fresh water and collecting garbage services, so people they do not have to live based on the dirty channel as well as let out waste water into the river or channels which moving around the urban center.
I believe that the best way of solving this would be creating a non profit foundation with a goal of providing homeless and poor people with accommodations. Building houses for many people may be a little out of reach because it would take a lot of resources, I believe a better way is to build a big complex/apartments for people. The article suggests that people does not like living in accommodations like hostels because there are many people and it does not feel like home, which I agree with. However, when you are given free accommodations, I feel like you should not be picky and appreciate it
According to Cohen and MacCartney (2004: 181), inequality is related to families and their compositions, because family compositions may be the cause or consequence of various forms of inequality. This paper will touch on four forms of inequality linked to families and their compositions. Firstly, families reflect inequalities, because within society, there is an unequal distribution of various resources ranging from economic, social and political, which can ultimately affect the accessibility of some family forms (Cohen & MacCartney, 2004: 181). For instance, low incomes increase the likelihood that underprivileged people will live with extended families (family group that includes parents, children, relatives, in-laws, friends and other individuals who share an emotional bond), even when they would prefer the privacy of a more secluded group of members, such as those experienced by higher income families and households (Cohen & MacCartney, 2004: 181; Extended family, n.d.:1). Hence, the accessibility of resources varies across families and households, with some having access to more resources in relation to others, which is why inequality has the ability to adversely affect families and households.
Low income housing: Low income housing is a struggle for families who want to live a better lifestyle. There’s needs and wants and when you have low income you don’t have time/or enough money to get the want’s you have to worry if you have enough for monthly rent cause if you but something out of order and you don 't have enough for rent you getting evicted. Just like that so sometimes you gotta be mindful of what you want cause people who have low income paying jobs can’t get the things they want. You also want to be on the lookout for your living conditions because you don’t wanna live in a house where it’s infested with roaches or rodents making your house dirty with bacteria and diseases (Castillo). Another thing is that people who tend

In recent decades, urban cities turned to become an attractive place for people from Different cultures to live in. This movement from different cultures to urban areas caused a significant change and development to urban cities and made it an extrovert area for different backgrounds.
