In the Summer of 1986, a tragedy struck my family. My brother, who was then 15 years old, was hit by lightning. He was sitting by the window looking out, when a strong lightning bolt hit the banana tree, and must have sent a current of electricity straight into his chest. We were shocked and I thought it was the end of the world. We had just moved to a new town where there was only one physician. We did not own a car so we had no way of bringing him quickly to the doctor's office. Unfortunately, doctors nowadays no longer provide house calls; despite that, we begged her to come, but she insisted that my brother had simply fainted and that a white flower oil, which is an analgesic balm made from a blend of herbs, would suffice. Due to my native culture and the experience of being raised on a farm, I had an interest in veterinary, but I also wanted a degree that would more aptly prepare me for law school. I initially thought of majoring in political science, but the word politics did not impress me so I decided to major in pharmacy instead. Pharmacy is one that included some study of jurisprudence that would lay a solid foundation for law school. Pharmacy not only exposed me to different legal experiences, but it also gave me a broad knowledge about pharmaceutical drugs that would prepare me to become a legal practitioner. I also valued the challenge of conducting extensive research on my own. My passion for learning was demonstrated as I earned honors each of my four years in college, and was awarded scholarships. After college I spent seven years working in a drugstore, where I developed further interpersonal skills as I worked with customers. I had complex responsibilities that involved customer's education and overseeing pharmacy assistants. It was during these times that I learned how to successfully complete multiple tasks while still striving to provide excellent service to my
