The Outsiders: Friendship The Outsiders is a coming-of-age novel written by S. E. Hinton. The story is told in a first-person narrative by Ponyboy Curtis, the protagonist. It tells of how Ponyboy and his gang called “The Greasers” went through a tough period of conflict with “The Socs” which is short for socials. The book has been fairly controversial and has been banned from some schools and libraries because of its portrayal of gang violence, underage smoking/drinking, and family dysfunction. Due to the casual violence and smoking that The Greasers take part in, many would say that they are a poor example of friendship. I however, feel that The Greasers are a good example of friendship despite these issues. Johnny and Ponyboy is the best
