Family Relationship In the 1987 constitution of the Philippines the family is recognized as “the foundation of the nation.” Various studies are evidence that family relationships determine the future of the younger members of the family. (Miller, Benson, & Galbraith, 2001; Olivia & Arranz, 2005; Ellis, McFadyen-Ketchum, Dodge, Pettit & Bates, 1999; Ryan, Russell, Huebner, Diaz & Sanchez, 2010; Neff & McGehee, 2009) In a study by Miller et al. (2001), parent-child closeness decreased risk of premarital intercourse and ultimately pregnancy among adolescents. Suicide Ideation is(are) “Thoughts of suicide that can range in severity from a vague wish to be dead to active suicidal ideation with a specific plan and intent” (Kaslow, 2014) There is a growing trend for suicide among teenagers based on various studies done around the world. (Harrington, 2001; Stoep, McCauley, Flynn & Stone, 2010; Galaif, Sussman, Newcomb & Locke, 2011; Upadhayay & Singh, 2006; Randall, Doku, Wilson & Peltzer, 2014; Aria, O’Grady, Caldeira, Vincent, Wilcox & Wish, 2010; Perry, 2003) In 2006, Upadhayay & Singh in India discovered from a study on 50 15-18 year old students that Males have higher suicide ideation while females had higher suicide attempts. this means to say that there is significant difference in the gender when it comes to suicide ideation. (Upadhayay & Singh, 2006) In the african nation of Benin, of the 2690 adolescents, 23.2% had suicide ideation and 28.3% attempted suicide. Among the factors that independently contributed to suicidal thoughts and behavior was lack of parental support. (Randall et al., 2014) In the USA, the results of self rating public scales distributed to 328 university students, one third of the subjects appeared to have lifetime suicide ideation. this was back in 2003 (McCauliffe et al., 2003).
