Together with Cabeza de Vaca, they headed west and south hoping to reach the Spanish Empire 's outpost in Mexico, becoming the first men of the Old World to enter the American West. Their route is not clear, but they apparently traveled across present day Texas, perhaps into New Mexico and Arizona and through Mexico 's northern provinces. John Winthrop, later chosen as the first Massachusetts Bay Colony governor, was seeking religious freedom. Wishing to inspire the colonists to dwell in brotherly unity, he summoned them together to remind them “that if we [colonists] shall deal falsely with our God in this work we have undertaken, and so cause Him to withdraw His present help from us, we shall be made a story and a by-word through the world.” On the other hand, those in the Chesapeake region came for the wealth that America promised. At one point in De Soto’s journey he was less than 300 miles from a similar expedition trekked by Francisco de Coronado (Bowman). Hernando De Soto, being one of the greatest know conquistadors, has many great accomplishments. In 1532 Hernando De Soto became the second in command of an expedition to Peru (Bowman). He served under Francisco Pizarro while on this expedition (Sansing 69). At the age of 36 De Soto was named Adelantado of Florida.

Beginning in 1492 gold motivated many explorers, from Christopher Columbus’s voyage to the New World to the Virginia Company’s colonization of America. Gold is a symbol for wealth, and many explorers soon realized the New World’s potential for wealth. The Spanish’s interest in wealth inspired Columbus’s expedition in the first place, as he was sent to India to trade for spices.
