Ever wondered how the Civil Rights Movement came into play? Many Supreme Court cases have influenced the Civil Rights movement by making equal and unequal laws for the blacks making people fight harder for what they believed in. Cases like the Dred Scott v. Sandford (1857) case, the Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) case, and the Brown v. Board of Education (1954) case. All three of these cases played a big role in influencing the Civil Rights movement.

The Christopher Vaughn case is a popular case in which ballistics and blood spatter aided in solving. Vaughn pleaded not guilty in court, and the defense stuck to the case that it was a murder-suicide case involving his wife. Paul Kish, a blood spatter expert assigned to the case, said that the evidence found at the crime scene did not correlate with Vaughn’s story. Vaughn’s blood was found in many different places; the center console, on his wife’s shorts, on the front and back of her seatbelt, and on the carpet between her shoes. Vaughn’s original statement did not mention the blood present on the seatbelt. When investigators at the crime scene unlatched and then re-latched her seatbelt, the wife’s chin was directly above the bloodstain. In September of 1961, a woman from District of Columbia had an intruder break into her apartment. While the invader of the home was there, they had taken her wallet, and also raped the woman. During the investigation of the crime, the police had found some latent fingerprints in the apartment. The police then established and processed the prints. Rep. Elijah Cummings says that he was told the state intends to retry the officer. However, there were protests after the announcing the mistrial and vasts majority of Baltimore’s populations is very disappointed with the outcome. The Dred Scott v. Sanford case involved a lawsuit made by a slave name Dred Scott claiming that he should be granted his freedom. His claims were based on the argument that his master Dr. John Emerson had illegally held his during trips to Illinois and Wisconsin which were both free territories. With Dr. Emerson having died at the time of the lawsuit, Scott sued his widow. The lawsuit was ultimately taken on by her brother Sanford hens the name Died Scott v. Sanford. Unfortunately for Scott, he was not identified as a citizen because he was a African American. Due to this, his case could not be heard because of the courts could only hear cases regarding citizens complains. In result, Dred Scott was not granted his freedom

On October 20, 2015, at approximately 1800 HRS, Detective Justin Story executed a search warrant at the residence of Larry Jones, located at 421 Decatur Rd., Atlanta, Georgia 30674. The case of People v. Smith in the Supreme Court of Michigan was a landmark case for the state. With the court determining its holdings on the lower trial courts sentencing guidelines and practices concerning the use of juvenile criminal records in adult criminal cases (People v. Smith, 437 Mich. 293 (1991)). The State of Michigan did file an appeal to the Supreme Court of Michigan concerning the decision by the Lower Court of Appeals in the case of Ricky Smith. The lower court did uphold the conviction of Smith, but did overturn his sentence and remanded him to a new sentencing hearing. The court viewed the use of his juvenile criminal record to violate Michigan state law. The court showed that the utilization of an offender’s juvenile criminal record allowed for the stigma of criminal behavior to follow the person into adulthood.
