This article discusses how badly the corrections officers treat the inmates at Mid-State Correctional Facility in New York. The inmates are beaten and penetrated by foreign objects by the officers that are supposed protect them. Not only are they mistreating the inmates but they are getting away with it as well. There are many instances and examples of inmates from this specific facility, Mid-State Correctional Facility, getting beaten by guards. These allegations of brutality against the inmates are going more viral now than ever.
Reading about Ronald Georgie Whetzel Jr., being in jail for next 40 years is a “hard pill to swallow”. Sadly, I agree with the court decision to sentence him to 40 years in jail. Whetzel Jr. commit took part in an armed home invasion and that cannot be excused. I am aware at time this event occurred he was 17 years old and had a difficult family upbringing. Andersonville was used as a confederate prisoner of war camp during the Civil War. The Camp was built in 1864 and during its time was home to over 45,000 soldiers. By primary referencing to investigations in California and Florida, and allegations in Mississippi and Louisiana, Cohen is able demonstrate how ill-equipped, and reckless prisons have become in response to the needs of prisoners with mental illness. He even goes so far to compare today’s jails to “medieval places of unspeakable cruelty” ( ). In “One of the Darkest Periods in the History of American Prisons,” Cohen appeals heavily on pathos to the convince the audience of the fundamental corruption and carelessness that beholds today’s prisons towards inmates, especially mentally ill inmates.

The crime rate in Texas has risen up; from un-resolved homicides to sexual assaults; therefore, when they are incarcerated they will be locked up and the public’s safety will be at ease. Humans are unreliable in many things, and the justice system just seems to prove it.
Implications for this book include Santos’s desire to help fix the prison system and the mass incarceration issue the U.S is facing. Santos is also helping other that are being prosecuted by the failing system. Upon being released and piecing his life back together, Santos started his own foundation called the Michael G Santos foundation. Through this foundation, Santos is helping bring awareness to the socials issues that result from mass incarceration while also helping former prisoner transition and integrate successfully back into the work force. Humans have to pay for in and out of that horrible place also would have to pay for the use in the prison will be something that won 't be ever thought of since it was so horrible. Newgate prison, a place that’s unexpected from the inside,outside, and people inside. The way the people are treated even if they deserved it due to their decision.

Davis explains that it is her hope that her book would help with any assumptions made by themselves or formulated by another on the topic of the American prison system, would be rethought. Her blunt tone guides the reader to only read facts without bias to reassure them that their beliefs are solely factual.
