Why the Packers are an Elite Team The start of the 2015 NFL season has been anticipated all year. Since the end of last season, many fans, analysts, and teams have been counting down to the start of the regular season, proclaiming that this year is, “our year.” One of those team that has a gratifying chance of having “their year” is the Green Bay Packers. The Packers are one of the present day elite teams in the NFL. With arguably the best quarterback in the NFL, Aaron Rodgers, a high powered offense, a mediocre defense, and a young, yet experienced roster, Green Bay is a Super bowl favorite in the 2015 season. The Packers’ run defense was ranked dead last through the first half of the 2014 season, giving up an average of 176 rushing yards per game through week 4. Defensive coordinator Dom Capers made sure that changed. After Green Bay’s week 9 bye, they move outside linebacker Clay Matthews to inside linebacker to help stop the run. The next week, the Packers beat the Bears in a lopsided game, 55 to 14. Chicago averaged only 2.3 yards per carry that game. The experiment was a moderate success the rest of the season, as the Packers’ run defense improved from dead last to 23rd in the league. Despite having a somewhat abysmal run defense, the pass defense was above par, ranking 10th while giving up a respectable 226 yards per game, with only 6.9 yard average, according to ESPN Stats & Info. With a solid defensive outing through two weeks so far, Green Bay can be able to run up the score on opponents, so expect to see Rodgers resting on the sideline for a few quarters like last season. With a high powered offense, solid defense, and experienced coaching staff and players, the Packers are an elite football team in the present day NFL. Because of this and a strong 2-0 start to the season, the Packers have the best odds of winning the Super bowl, 5-1, per Bovada.
