I grew up in a home where my mom had a wealth of knowledge on health and nutrition. She would invite us to exercise with her in the mornings, limit our time spent in front of the computer or television, ate healthy, and made sure we ate healthy. She was the ultimate example to me of a healthy life style. In turn, I have become a huge advocate not just for healthy eating or consistent exercise, but a healthy lifestyle. This encompasses a healthy diet and exercise, but also mental health. I make sure I do the same things my mom has demonstrated to me, and it has led me to a happier life. I feel better, and I am able to perform better in the many hats I wear in my community. I have been able to promote each of these aspects in my community …show more content…
My understanding of this began when I was fifteen years old and began coaching young gymnasts. I find joy in feeling the energy in these young athletes and teaching them how to channel their emotions and energy into gymnastics skills. This is the beginning of understanding and taking care of our mental health; training our mind and body to channel emotions into productive uses. I also found myself, at the end of class, encouraging students to go home, drink water, and eat some fruits and vegetables. As I reflect, I now see the way in which I was able to begin encouraging these young minds to be active, channel emotions, and take care of their body’s through eating healthy.
A few years later, I broadened my horizons of teaching and began teaching at a dance studio in my hometown. These students were not as young as my gymnastics students were, and I found myself surrounded by girls ranging from the ages of 8 to 16. From personal experience, I would consider this to be one of the most challenging times of life for a girl. This time is when girls are navigating through the lies and false images of what you should look like, how you should eat, and this combination can lead to poor mental health and

Simple acts such as inviting my siblings to go on a hike with me and my husband, offering them healthy snacks, and trying to be a safe place for them to express their emotions has been one of my largest influences. When I think of community, I often think of a large group, but we often look over some of the most important people in our community, our family-members. Through simple example, and invitation, I feel I have been able to continue to influence them to have a healthy
Community services, helping others in need, and giving and providing for the poor and all important actions I want them to see me doing, and to participate in as well. Therefore, as a family we help not only other family members, but neighbors alike. We were to “go to” family prior to moving, for our elderly neighbors when they needed assistance in any form. We cut trees, cut lawns, rototilled gardens, raked leaves, took laundry off lines, and help fix minor projects around their
The Healthy People 2020 initiative gives 10-year national objectives for improving the health of all Americans. These objectives are to be met by the year 2020 (healthy people reference). The vision of this health initiative is to help create a society where people live long and healthy lives. People, as defined in the Health Promotion Model (HPM), are organisms shaped by their environment that also have the ability to shape
According to an author for the American Psychological Association, Kirsten Weir, stress impacts the production of hormones and the functioning of the immune system (Weir). A recent study conducted by Emory University School of Medicine found that the inflammatory immune response, impacted by stress, “has also been linked to a variety of bodily ills, from diabetes and heart disease to depression” (Weir). Margot Putukian, a member of the NCAA Education Outreach, has noticed the impacts of stress on student-athletes and believes the primary concerns, regarding the prevalence of mental illness within the population of student-athletes, are the effects mental illness brings to their success in academics, athletics, and their general well-being (Putukian). Balancing the demands of being an athlete and a student places a large amount of pressure on the individual. This balancing act leads to many health issues affecting student athletes across many components of their life
The number of young people experiencing mental health difficulties is on the increase. Statistics show that more than one in two young people will present with some form of mental disorder by the time they reach the age of 24 (Cannon et al. 2013). Good mental health is fundamental to the ability of young people to remain healthy and to enjoy their lives. It enables them to develop and succeed, to participate in and contribute to society. Over the past decade mental health has come to the forefront of public consciousness.
"Nobody was protecting us from being taken advantage of. Nobody was even concerned whether or not we were being sexually abused. I was not protected, and neither were my teammates" (Armour 11). No one in the gymnastics world was helping these girls stay protected, no one cared if they were hurt, or being abused. This left them scared, and as if they had nowhere to go to.
Growing up in Hawaii, the idea of community was always such a fundamental part of who I was. I have never looked at it from the perspective of how it benefited me rather how it benefitted everyone around me. Everything I have done from joining local clubs that enriched the Hawaiian culture to volunteering with the west Hawaii special olympics program have helped me become the person I am today. My family has had a huge role in making sure that I am involved with the community. They passed down their practices in paddling, environmental conservation of Kealakekua Bay and encouraging the people who need it the most.
I strongly value my health and believe that health is our greatest form of wealth. When one lives a healthy lifestyle, it means more opportunities to explore the world, build families, achieving anything the heart desires and conquering personal goals. The behavior change philosophy fits my personal philosophy of health education the most because it involves goal setting, behavioral contracts and self-monitoring to help foster the modification of an unhealthy habit. The behavior change philosophy is very important because change is a process, not an event. Self-efficacy and motivation are key factors in successful behavior changes.
One thing I always try to do is volunteer in my church when they need help, which often times takes many forms. Sometimes I will serve coffee before church or watch children in the nursery. Other times I serve or prepare meals for college students to eat after third service. Occassionally, we will have cookie sign ups where you make a couple dozen cookies and then deliver them to new families in our church As I see the example of those older than me, I try to recreate that for those younger than
People influence others and individuals see others in their community yet alone their family making unhealthy decisions they will more likely do the same. Such as the Asian community devaluing their Chinese culture as family for more American attitudes. They are influenced by others (advertisements, friends, neighbors) and take up bad
Being a leader in any capacity can be without a doubt a most challenging feat. It depends though on how a person exhibits his or her leadership qualities and so doing will automatically lead by example. According to Liano (2016), “Each day you are leading by example. Whether you realize it or not or whether it’s positive or negative, you are influencing those around you.”
These many positive impacts illustrate how it’s beneficial for one’s mental health, even though it can have some negative parts
Procedure Part 1. How well are you? 1. Which aspects of my overall wellness are strongest? Why?
In order to be physically, mentally/intellectual and socially/intrapersonal well and healthy, we must processed some of these traits: First is physically healthy. How can someone be physically fit? Well ofc, you must recognize the need for physical activity. Optimal wellness is met through the combination of good exercise and good eating habits. Us people, have the belief that it is better to consume foods and beverages that enhance good health rather than those which impair it.
Everyone likes to stay fit and healthy, but not everyone is. Staying healthy is important to ensure a happy life without worries about the health as it helps the human steers clear of diseases. Additionally, at these times, high proportions of people are suffering from obesity, which is being overweight and unhealthy. To be healthy, it is necessary to know how to, so there are three main tips that people have to follow in order to stay healthy.
When exploring what is health, it looks at the idea of an individual being free from illness or injuries (World Health Organization 1948). WHO further explains that it is the state of complete: physical, mental, and social well-being and not the absence of disease or infirmity (health context, 2018) In 1986 during Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion, WHO said health is a resource for everyday life, not the objective of living, also is a positive concept emphasizing social, personal resources, and physical capacities. There are different aspects that contribute and impact a person’s health such as their: family and friends, education or job, body, spirit and mind, and all these need to balance to ensure good health (health context, 2018).
