When you are young, you are asked: "what do you want to be when you grow up?" Most children would reply by saying a superhero, a professional basketball player, a model, etc. My response was always, someone who can make a difference in an individual's life. Finding out how I was going to do that exactly was challenging until I reached my junior year in high school. I remember going to the Dental Office to get my regular cleaning and after watching my Dental Hygienist at the time, conduct her regular duties such as cleaning my teeth and educating me on good oral health I was intrigued. At that very moment, I knew that I wanted to help others by becoming a Dental Hygienist. I think that promoting and educating others on good oral health is very important because it

In my placement at Vellore Woods Density most of the time we need to use teamwork skills because we are handling with people’s teeth and need to communicate with each other on what we need such as equipment’s. Patients are sometimes hard to keep them calm when they are all worked up or simply really nervous. We would try to reassure them, and tell them things would work out well. I learned a trick from my co-workers that if you keep calm, the patients will keep calm as well. They will also distract them by having mini conversations or have a conversation with each other (dentist and assistant) when the patients is going through surgery. This makes the patient be focused on the conversation then what’s going on with the

When we were all younger, most of us had an idea of what we wanted to be when we grew up. Whether it was a firefighter or president, we all had our future planned out. But once we got older and entered high school, plans changed. For me personally, I changed my mind a couple of times before I made a decision about what I wanted to do with my life. I decided that I wanted to go to Parkland College and get my degree in Dental Hygiene. Why dental hygiene? Well, being a dental hygienist is a very stable job. People will always need their teeth to be cleaned and I would be paid well even in the beginning of the job. I wanted a job that would be stress free but also help people at the same time also.
Dentists will diagnose and treat problems that occur in the mouths, teeth, and gums of the patients they oversee. Some of these treatments include filling cavities, removing decay from teeth, straightening teeth, place sealants, give whitening treatments, write prescriptions, examine x-rays, and administer anesthetics during procedures. They also counsel each individual on how to maintain good oral hygiene and base their diet around their teeth. Before, the main focus of dental hygienists is to treat clients’ tooth decay and gum diseases. I have considered Dental Health for my health determinant, as there is a growing concern that children are having more than their recommended daily amount of sugar. According to (World Health Organisation, 2012) 60-90% of children nationally have dental caries. There are many dangers of sugar, children who regularly drink fruit juices and fizzy drinks are more prone to tooth decay due to the buildup of plaque on the teeth. When the plaque reacts with the sugars from the drink, it produces acid. The acid causes the tooth enamel to disintegrate leading to tooth decay. If left untreated, children are at risk of developing toothache and extreme cases, tooth loss. (Childs, 2001).
