Abstract
Consumerism or consumer movement is very important towards consumer, environment, industry, and economic growth. The issues of consumerism are always a big concern among consumers around the world. Therefore, in this research, we have studied a top retailing company in Malaysia which is AEON Co. (M) Berhad. The purpose of conducting this study is to examine about the consumerism issues faced by AEON. By examining this study, we found out that there are two main consumerism issues faced by AEON which are food safety and advertisements issues. Besides, the issues faced, we also found out that AEON is trying hard to make responses on solving the issues. AEON succeed to obtain Halal certificate to solve the food safety problem. In addition, AEON also gave promotion and voucher to their loyal customers and tried to provide a better service to fulfil their customers’ satisfaction. These actions had AEON to become a trusted and social-friendly company.

Consumerism is an action that organized by some groups or government which has the purpose on protecting the consumer from unethical business behaviour. In Malaysia, there is a non-governmental organisation that set up an association namely Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (FOMCA) which is the head of thirteen consumer associations in Malaysia to protect Malaysia’s consumer. After World War One had ended, many Americans felt that they deserved to splurge on luxury goods, such as new cars and radios, to reward themselves after such a tragic event. The roaring twenties were a period of prosperity for America, where consumerism was at an all time high and so was the demand for goods. Because many Americans could not afford their desires with their meager wages, the government decided to open up the credit system to everyone, and not just businesses. Credit became wildly popular, and during this time many people purchased items they could not have been able to afford without credit. For many, credit gave them a false sense of what they could afford, and they sunk into debt.
The consumer revolution that occurred in the 1920s gave Americans prosperous hope for the future of the United States of America. The people became comfortable on how they were living their lives. After the stock market crashes in 1929, people were left jobless and hungry. For those who do not know exactly what happened in the Great Depression and just figure it was a time of famine and unemployment and wasn 't thought of as a big deal, but it sure was. As people began to move from suburban development to more urban and industrial areas, consumerism has been on the rise. Consumerism inhabits 5 core elements: job creation and work production, economics and politics, competition and corporate culture, social class, and gender and race. In the 1920s, consumerism began to boom as more middle-class families were able to afford items that were once considered luxuries such as electric refrigerators and vacuum cleaners. Consumerism changed the world as it was known and allowed for more advancements in communications, labor production and force, and so much more.
Statistics show that today there are over 1.7 billion members of the “consumer class”- half of them being in the developing world (2011, the World Watch Institute). Being part of the consumer class myself, I believe it is crucial to dispense a great deal of money on goods and services to improve the economy here in Canada. Does this mean I’m considered to be a consumer as a result of my views on world consumption? Yes, I fit into the category of a consumer due to the fact that I’m part of the endless cycle of supply and demand. From the moment I leave my house and walk the two minutes to the bus stop I’m already thinking about what I’m going to buy.
The growth of consumerism and the Atlantic economy interacted with Enlightenment ideas by helping spread Enlightenment ideas. Enlightenment ideas encouraged change by doubting traditions and standard rules of that current time. Change that came from Enlightenment ideas included educated change, equality change, and reform change. Educated, equality, and reform changes were able to occur because of awareness towards issues that were brought up due to the spread of Enlightenment ideas. Because of the growth of consumerism and the Atlantic economy the Enlightenment idea of education was able to make educated change come about.
The growth of consumerism generated Enlightenment ideas through material goods and helped expand the Atlantic economy. New developments in how commercial goods where manufactured, traded, and used created a time of consumer revolution. With the changes of consumerism came changes in Enlightenment ideas. It was a cause and effect chain that would create a different way of life for Europe.
Therefore, Consumerism has variety of meanings, it can be defend as protecting consumer interests, advertising, sales promotion decency, and the quality of the products. Consumption In Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World”, the concepts of consumerism and utopia are continuously compared and discussed in tandem with one another to decide if any correlation between them is present. Although people may argue that the humans belonging to the World State are happy, their lack of simple human pleasures such as love, religion, intellect, free will, etc, denies the people of actual joy. Since the government is what controls these pleasures by glorifying consumption, the World State’s culture and consumerism must interrelate. In today’s World World, there is a high level of consumption which has been described as a major threat on sustainability. Even though consumerism has positive effects like motivating people to work harder in order to improve their social status and well being, it has adverse effects on the environment and the social aspect of life. Sustainablity, on the other hand, according to the ‘brudtland report’ was broadly defined as Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
