CHAPTER – 1 INTRODUCTION
Our Mother Nature stands as an inexhaustible source of therapeutic agents and man has looked toward nature for remedies ever since the dawn of civilization. Although modern medicine system has steadily developed over the years by scientific and observational efforts of scientists, the basis of its development remains rooted in traditional medicine and therapies, prevailing throughout the world for thousands of years. Natural products, including plants, animals and minerals have been the basis of treatment of human diseases. The plants based herbal drugs are currently in great demand all over the globe as they imply safety in contrast to the synthetic modern medicines that are even though very effective but regarded as precarious due to their side effects to humans and environment (Joy et al., 1998). Modern health care system stressed more on the curative and lesser extent to the preventive aspects of diseases and very little has been done on the health promotive aspects. Thus problems of health have been replaced by problems of drugs and diseases. Instead of medicine for man now we have men for medicine. Modern medicine may help man to provide apparent physical health but is devoid of mental, social and spiritual health. Modern medicine is more concerned for the cure of diseases but remains indifferent to health preservation.
