Explain the role of the learning curve and the importance of transferring learning to the workplace. The learning curve describes how new skills or knowledge can be learnt in a given time. It is a graph which shows the changing rate of learning for a given activity. The curve can increase in the initial attempts, but then slowly evens out as less and less information is retained by the individual. The steeper the curve represents faster and easier learning, the flatter the curve represents slower and more difficult learning. The graph shows that the individual will get better as they attempt to repeat the activity. The learning curve is important to business when they hire and train new employees, it allows the business to increase their production efficiently, it allows them to budget and forecast their future costs. The learning curve theory suggests that it takes less effort and time for an individual to do something in repetition. For the learning to be efficient then the individual needs to be interested and motivated in the thing being taught. If they aren’t interested then their learning and performance can be compromised. Assess the contribution of learning styles and theories when planning and designing a learning event. For this section of the assignment I am going to write about how a quality management awareness course should be planned. Stage 1 – You need to explain the purpose of the training and the targeted audience. You need to make sure that it is clear what you want to accomplish by having the training. Whether it is to develop employees knowledge, develop their professional needs etc. and explain what they will get out of the training. You need to prioritise the spectrum of training needs before you determine the main focus of the training subject. Once the purpose and the targeted audience have been chosen, you need to then promote the training to the chosen employees. Stage 2 – You need to determine the employees’ needs / preparation for the training. Here you will need to look at the learning objectives, you need to know about the employees, their needs and see whether the training will be meaningful to them.
