2.1 Freshwater fish in Malaysia

2.1.1 Peninsular Malaysia

Tropical region rich with fresh water diversity and almost 10,000 species of fresh water fishes are recognized but still more undiscovered and not described (Nelson, 1994). Actually, South-East Asia fish species are less than South America but there have greater diversity of families (Kottelat et al., 1993). Malaysia has included in top 10 countries that have highest freshwater fish diversity which more than 600 described species (Kottelat and Whitten, 1996). Hashim et al. (2012) stated that Malaysia is country that has rich in biodiversity and also known as a ‘hot megadiversity country’. Ismail and Sabariah (1995); Chong et al. (2010) has record 1000 species of freshwater fish species found in the South-East Asian Tropics and from that 420 species can be found in Malaysia. In 2002, 278 species are recognized as native with 24 species that non-native in Malaysia (Lim & Tan 2002). Examples of non-native fishes in Malaysia are the bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilis), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), and tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) (Welcomme 1981; Mohsin and Ambak 1983). The pollution also can cause the changes in species composition and diversity. When solid waste leaching to the lagoon, it will change the aesthetic, fishes unable to stay at the lagoon because the changes of quality and it will reduce the size of available breeding grounds for various fish species (Amaeze et al., 2012). Mostly, water degradation is associated with presence of higher nutrients (phosphorus, ammonia and nitrogen) in water and it can affect fish physiology and growth (Mohd Shafiq et al.,
