Beginning in the early twentieth century, jazz spread quickly amongst clubs and bars across the poorer urban areas such as cities like New Orleans. Due to jazz artist’s unique musical swing, jazz quickly became recognized all around the world. Throughout history, many jazz artists have made their unique sound known. Three artists, in particular, that enlightened others by their outstanding talent include Louis Armstrong, Thelonious Monk, and Billie Holiday. Each of these artists have their own method of performing jazz in an inimitable manner which no one can deny. Born in New Orleans in 1901, Louis Armstrong was brought into a life that was not so easy at first. During his younger years he dealt with some trials and tribulations, but soon after his first marriage in 1918, things began to look brighter for him due to the recognition of his musical talent. In 1922, Armstrong received a phone call persuading him to travel to Chicago and start his career as a jazz artist. Today, Louis Armstrong is considered to be one of the most influential jazz artists of all time. Armstrong’s musical style consisted of jazz, swing, Dixieland, and traditional pop. Born in 1915, Holiday grew up knowing exactly what she was meant to do. Holiday used her vocal skills and turned it into beautiful jazz music. Her music sticks out due to her range of smooth vocals. Of all the elements in her musical masterpieces, including the use of the saxophone and piano, Holiday’s vocals seem to stick out the most. Her style brought a sense of calmness in a time of world commotion. Her music was very popular during a time of war and listeners reached out to her style of music in order to forget the bad happenings and enjoy good music.
