Linda Sue Park guides us through the book A Long Walk to Water about a Sudanese refugee named Salva one of the only Lost Boys of Sudan that survived. Salva fled from his school when the war came to his part of the country. In A Long Walk to Water there were a few factors that made survival possible for Salva, support from loved ones, hope and perseverance, and opportunity. One factor that Salva survive was help and support from loved ones. In the novel Salva was scared and alone without his family after fleeing from school and into the bush.
How Did Salva Survive The War? Did you know that over 20,000 people- mostly kids from the age of 5-10, fled from their hometowns in Sudan in order to go to Ethiopia and Kenya? A Long Walk to Water is about an 11 year old boy, named Salva, who lived in Sudan, until the civil war broke out. He traveled for hundreds of miles on foot.
In the book, A Long Walk to Water, by Linda Sue Park, Salva learns it is okay to rely on others for help. This essay view’s on how Salva was able to make it through the desert, despite all the difficulties, using motivating words from his uncle. “He had to slow down, and for the first time on the long journey, he had began to lag behind the group.” (Linda Sue Park,53) At this point in the walk through the Akobo Desert Salva was behind the group thirsty, injured, and tired, not sure if he could keep walking.
This hardship is the raging war of Southern Sudan. In the beginning of the story Salva, an eleven year old boy is sitting in school when he hears a cracking sound. His classmates look out of the window while the cracking is getting closer, gunshots hit the school. His teacher issues everyone to get down. When they get out of the classroom to the outside, he tells everyone to run into the bush and to not stop running.
The Dinka and Nuer tribes have both been affected negatively by guns. The use of guns by these tribes has changed their beliefs, respect, and way of life. In the excerpt it says "Children, women and the elderly used to be off-limits during raids..." then later on it shows how the tribes start to kill the women and children. It also says " 'They believe, 'The ghost of the deceased will not haunt me, because I did not kill with a spear, '". Finally it also says " He found armed youths running roughshod in a society whose dysfunction paralleled that of inner cities 8,000 miles away..."
When the rebels attacked Mattru jong, which is part of Sierra Leone, people fled for their lives, and mothers were separated from their children. A Long Way Gone is nonfiction story and true story of a boy named Ishmael Beah who is also the author himself. It is about how he becomes a boy soldier during a civil war in Sierra Leone. When he was 12 years old, his village was attacked while he is away performing in a rap group with friends; which at the time he and his friends thought was cool because it came from America. With the confusion, violence, and uncertainty of the war, Ishmael, his brother, and his friends wander to all different villages to find food and shelter. They soon begin to struggle to survive, and the boys find themselves committing acts they would never thought of doing, such as stealing food from children.
The author uses a lot of imagery, symbol, and builds a connection with the readers. In the country Sierra Leone, a war broke out in 1993 where the rebel turns against the government. The main character, Ishmael Beah, at age 12, face his hardest situation that took away his childhood. He has to find safety and his lost family.
This was only possible because the group’s perseverance and they worked through their troubles. In conclusion, we should all persevere like Salva and Nya and we will be rewarded. In the end, Salva makes his dream a reality and Nya gets clean water and can go to school, but only because they worked hard to do whatever they needed to
In Linda Sue Park’s novel A Long Walk to Water, demonstrates one of many true stories of many a Lost Boy. Salva an eleven year old had to flee from his village all alone because his village was attacked due to the Second Sudanese War that began in 1983. When Salva was at school and his village was being attacked,he was told not to go home, but into the bush,that's where his whole journey began. Salva had to show confidence, determination,and perseverance in order to survive in a difficult environment.

In the text it states “He worked hard so she would not send him away.” (18) Salva worked hard, to have a place to stay during the fighting. Salva helped with the boats so he could get over the river faster. The text explains “It was hard work running back and forth between those cutting and those weaving.”
The Lost Boys of Sudan is a name they gave to a group of refugees who escaped Sudan because of the civil war that was occurring. In order to reach Kakuma in Kenya, they had walked more than a thousand miles. Their trip started in Sudan then they started walking to Ethiopia. However, they had to go back and head to refugee camps in Kenya instead. They had faced several challenges when they were walking.
