Maya Angelou was influenced by Dr. Martin Luther King in many ways including his message about Civil Rights, the way he set up the Southern Leadership Conference, and the way he felt about her imprisoned brother. Maya was influenced by Martins speeches about Civil Rights, she said when her and Godfrey heard him speak she had been carried to glory on his wings of hope. Maya found his speeches to be so moving and heartfelt that she called him her hero for making her want to fight for Civil Rights and want to join the Civil Rights Movement. She also said she thought of King as her leader because on April 4, 1968 Dr. King helped her organize the Poor People's March in Memphis, Tennessee.
