“Act your age,” a common reprimand we have all heard or been told at one point in our lives. Many people believe that getting older guarantees a higher level of maturity. However, someone’s maturity does not depend on their age, but rather on their environment and mentality. Not all children are raised in a perfect and loving family; some children are forced to “grow up” faster due to difficult family situations. Children are heavily impacted by the environment they were raised in, for it affects people’s mind psychologically, thus causing different levels of maturity in each individual.
There are times where people are incapable of “growing up” due to an illness that they have, which shows that this quote cannot be considered true for all instances. In those cases, it is beyond the control of the individual to mature and they are actually unable to do so. In most cases though, mental maturation is something that happens when a person wants it to happen and attempts to actually make it happen. There are a lot of times where people do not realize that they have to make an effort to actually grow up and so remain immature for a long period of time. They either do not realize that this could be detrimental to them in the future or simply do not care, but either way, they do not grow up.
Maturation is a natural phenomenon experienced by everyone. It starts from the day birth and continues until death. Although this process is natural and will happen inevitably, different people in a person’s life can hasten it. For example, a person can be spurred away from home by his family and forced to mature prematurely. As well, someone could say something to make one see the world a different way.
“So, like a forgotten fire, a childhood can always flare up again within us (Gaston Bachelard).” This quote means that even in our most mature times we can still act like a child. I know for a fact that everyone still has part of our childhood with us. Even if we think that we are all grown up we still have a child’s spirit. It even says in the bible that we should have the faith of the child.

Black people have many disadvantages stemming from multiple sources such as, slavery, race-based exclusion, lack of education, social and economic resources, amongst other things. Socioeconomic status is linked to mental health. People who are impoverished, homeless, incarcerated or have substance abuse problems are at higher risk for poor mental health. Racism still continues to have a negative impact on black people, especially the mental health of blacks. Historically and contemporary occurrences of antagonistic treatment led to a distrust of authorities.
Mental illnesses are conditions that affect a person’s thinking, emotions, and their functioning capabilities on a daily basis. “In the United States, more than 37 million people are known to experience a mental condition in a year’s time. Next to cardiovascular diseases mental illnesses are the second leading cause of disability and premature death.” (Litin, 2009.) Many mental illnesses have a strong genetic basis, but there are many other factors that can make a person vulnerable to developing a cognitive impairment.

In the short story “Growing Up,” Maria’s family went on a vacation while she stayed at home, but when she heard there was a car crash that happened near where her family was staying, she gets worried and thinks it is all her fault for trying to act mature and angering her father. There are so many mentally ill people in correctional facilities because most families do not know how to help their loves ones who suffer from a mental illness, so the call the police for help. Majority of the police officers do not know what to do or how to handle people with a mental illness disease. Police officers who are not trained to deal with the mentally ill often do not recognize that person is ill. Some police officers do not recognize if the individual should or not go to jail or a treatment center or medical facility. The impact of law enforcement and the judicial system dealing with people with a mental illness is to assist the inmates with the help they need.
Coming of Age Life is all about choices and how we choose to make them. Who we are and where we go in life is largely determined by decisions that we choose to make: where we go to college, who our friends are, who we eventually decide to marry. However, sometimes in life, we encounter a situation where we are forced to mature maybe before we are ready. In my case, my younger brother was born when I was seven with a multitude of health problems. While my parents were preoccupied with taking care of him, I sometimes was forced to fend for myself and making sure my younger sister was cared for.
What can be done The monitoring, prevention and treatment of mental disorders, as well as the promotion of good mental health, are part of the public health goals in prisons. According to World Health Organization (2017), even in resource-limited countries, measures can be taken to improve the mental health of prisoners and prison staffs, which can be adapted to the country’s cultural, social, political and economic environment (WHO, 2017). In the British prisons, some practices and policies have also been implemented, which reflect the positive impacts of prisoners’ mental health and wellbeing. Provide prisoners with appropriate mental health treatment and care.
The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum is a large part of history in West Virginia. It is also a more popular tourist attraction and has been on a few supernatural television show. The asylum has so much crazy and a like fighting history. The asylum has so many opportunities to venture around the building and if you are lucky you can experience supernatural activity for yourself. The can take day tour that last an hour and a half or you can spend a night in the building.
Maturity is a big factor in growing up. It makes a child view the world in a different perspective, which ultimately helps in the real world as the child realizes more about oneself, the world, and others. In the short story “The nest”, the protagonist named Jimmy commits acts of maturity which leads to an important theme in the story; growing up. Why do the people of today still associate stigma, shame and blame with mental health issues? Mental health issues are extremely and widely misunderstood. Despite the fact one in four people are likely to experience some kind of mental health problem a year in the United Kingdom. “Mental health is a person’s condition with regard to their psychological and emotional well-being and it affects how we feel, think and act. It also helps to determine how we handle situations such as stress, how we relate to others and how we make decisions.
