‘Are you kidding me?! You can’t be a doctor! Look at you. You are so tiny!
Imagine your first day as an intern in a reputed hospital. You were all set to conquer the world with your newly acquired knowledge and empathetic sentiments to eradicate all sorrows from the lives of your patients. However, when you try to take the history of your very first patient as a professional, this is what she declared. Baam! Welcome back to the planet Earth! Although I may look a little younger than I should, my commitment to the profession is as deeply-rooted as my sense of identity.
Ever since I gained consciousness of black and white, I was fortunate enough to recognize my interest with the delicacy of the neural circuits in a human body. Hence, neurology has always been my first choice in medicine. Even if you were to wake me up from deep sleep and ask me a career choice, I would blurt out ‘Neurology’ without a second thought.
Initially, this fascination with neural sciences was rather whimsical and was based on mere mysterious convolutions of gyri and sulci. Nonetheless, as I grew up, my passion for it got intrinsically linked with reason. Brain is what

In order to explore that philanthropic side, I volunteered for mentally-challenged children when I was in school. ‘Patients are your books, you just don’t read them, you pay attention to every single detail’, one of my mentor mentioned these lines during his session. His words have always been resonated with my early experience with the specially-abled and have helped me recognize their challenges. Just by closely following their actions and trying to understand their sufferings, I have learnt to establish a bond with them. Similarly, a careful history and thorough examination could do wonders for you in understanding patient-care and reaching timely
Neurologist Oliver Sacks in “The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat: and Other Clinical Tales” takes an inside look at people who have severe illnesses and shows the reader what it’s like to be them. In his patients, he really finds what they excel at, despite their disabilities. A lot of doctors will look at a patient’s chart, solve their illness, and be done. Dr. Sacks saw his patients beyond a piece of paper. He got to know the individual, what they like, how they live, and this is truly incredible.
Medical Assisting Being a wife and mother of three; I decided that I would return to school to better myself and my family. Mostly to get out and be around people and to help in my community. When researching about medical assisting the article informed me about the future jobs and pay of medical assistants. Medical assistants complete administrative and clinical tasks in the offices of physicians, podiatrist, chiropractors and other health practitioners. Medical assistant duties vary within location, specialty and size of the practice.
Blaire Kennon Mrs. Adams English 9 Pre-Ap 13 April 2017 Physician Assistant The medical field is my dream job. Any time I step into a doctor’s office, hospital, or nursing home I feel comfortable and totally interested.
In those hospital visits I had become accustomed to the sights and smells of a doctor’s office that instead of reminding me of pain, comforted me. I knew from then on, that the medical field was where I was called to serve.
Personal Statement Many pairs of eyes stared at me, while I gave my first speech at the Sikh Temple of Riverside, on the Massacre of 1984 event that took place in Punjab, India. The speech was based upon a book that I read at my Sunday school while I was in high school, which described the 1984 genocide of Sikhs in India, by anti-Sikh mobs, most notable members of the government, in response to the assassination of Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards. Thousands of people were displaced in the massacre and many mothers lost their sons and husbands in these riots. However, till this present day the Government of India has still not actively prosecuted and punished those responsible for the mass killings, and many mothers are still waiting for their sons to return after many years because they don’t if they are dead or missing. This book gave me an insight to the
For the past 18 years I wanted to do something practical and respected. Belonging to the model minority emphasized that belief even more. Due to those factors, I wanted to be an otolaryngologist specializing in laryngology. I thought this way I could get somewhat close to my passion of singing while raking in the prestige and cash. So then I decided to apply to schools with strong pre-med programs, but I also kept in mind my love for music, resulting in me applying to numerous liberal arts colleges.
Not a single person in my family is involved in medicine. Nor do they enjoy being anywhere near the doctor’s office or a hospital so naturally, I had no exposure to medicine till my high school years except for being a fan of medical television such as Grey’s Anatomy and House. During this time, I became privy to a different side of medicine and health care. Shadowing doctors and volunteering in a hospital, I was fascinated by the unique language that separated the hospital from the world outside.
In the science of psychology, an individual can specialize in many different areas within this type of study. For a form of psychology to be considered as a “specialty” it must follow the guidelines that the American Psychological Association, APA, have set. The APA will only recognize a form of psychology if it is counseling, clinical, industrial or organizational, and school psychology. Any that are outside of the following forms of psychology are considered as sub-fields or areas of concentration (Specialties). An example of a specialty within psychology is Neuropsychology.
Choosing a career in the medical field can very be overwhelming, there are a multitude of options. The job that is in demand the most is Registered Nurses. This degree, at the minimum, requires an associate’s degree. By the year 2020, all R.N.’s will need to have a BSN (Bachelors of Science in Nursing); Bachelor’s degree programs are 4-year programs. But don’t stop there, after 2-3 years of on the job experience, find what area you would like to specialize in, and go on and earn that Physician Assistant degree.
Ever since high school, I knew I wanted to work in the pathology field. I thought I wanted to be a pathologist. I talked to the career counselors at my school and expressed my interest. Fortunately for me, I was contacted not much after about an internship at Montefiore Medical Center. I would come to learn that Montefiore Medical Center is the teaching hospital of Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
Since a child I was always held responsible for attending doctor 's appointments with my parents due to their language barrier. Surprisingly, I never felt that responsibility as a burden because hospitals intrigued me. The polar emotions of safety and fear simultaneously, fascinated me. With this awareness when I began taking science courses at North Shore Community College, I found that the subject also fascinated me. The components of liking the hospital and material, had led me to the realization that I had a calling for the medical field.
The profession I have chosen to pursue is that of a Physician Assistant. My reason for this selection is because it gives you the independency of a Physician while having somewhat less responsibilities. A Physician Assistant provides healthcare services typically performed by a physician, under the supervision of a physician. Some of these services include but are not limited to examining and treating patients, diagnosing illnesses and counseling patients. In some case physician assistants are also tasked to prescribe medicine to patients.
I've learned that even though the language is sometimes different, the feelings and emotions are the same. Seeing how brave and stoic some patients can be in a time of pain and uncertainty is truly humbling. I am grateful for the exposure I've had to the vastly different people I help care for at work. I believe it has made me a better person, and I now know what it means to learn something from every interaction. I hope to bring this diverse learning experience to the UA COM and collaborate with fellow classmates to help keep peoples minds open and to approach every patient with the mindset of not only healing but learning something from
