Throughout the life, certain circumstances may force people to change their lives drastically and the most significant turning on my life road I made when decided to come to the United States and pursue my current degree. To start with, I am from the UAE, which as everyone know is a non-English speaking country. I was raised in a joint family where there are more than 15 members. Of all of them, my father and his brother are the only people with English speaking skills. In my school, English has been my second language and has not been in my curriculum until I was in my ninth grade.
Now that I have developed skills in English when I compared with what I was taught in my high school was like the basics of English. Since English was not given

I am able to speak a good amount of English but when it comes to putting my thoughts and ideas on paper, I face extreme difficulty. It frequently seems to me that I have a million thoughts in my mind but still there are difficulties in conveying them by writing. So, this semester I took academic reading and writing module to improve my reading and writing skills. However good may be one’s basic English skills, here is much more to learn and this module of Academic Reading and Writing will help me to express myself out there. This can also help me in building my career as an Engineering student.
Here in this module, I will be learning to analyze things and write them down in my own words. I am pretty much sure that I will be treated very differently in here and in my home country with all the skills I have acquired in English. It will certainly help me in maintaining my father’s businesses and also improve them. I started reading books, watching movies and TV shows so that I am able to improve my listening skills. I can watch several of TV shows but still I am not completely able to understand all of them. Hopefully by the end of this course, I will advance in my reading and writing skills in
Everyone must have been through a significant change in one point of their life. The significant change that I been through was in my early age. During those few years attending to Atlantic Middle School, I survived from cultural differences and language barriers. When I was fourteen years old I traveled by myself from my home in Fuzhou (a city in southern China) to Boston, Massachusetts to reunite with my family, who had been living in the United States for the past eight years.
Imagine what it is like to be seven years old moving to a country where you don’t know anyone, you don’t understand the language, and everything seems foreign. When I first arrived to the United States, I didn’t have friends due to my inability to speak English. It wasn’t an easy journey, but my determination to achieve the American Dream gave me strength to keep going. I decided to take English courses during my free time, and now I am a great writer who is fluent in both English and Spanish.
As I saw the world of America as soon we landed, I knew that I had an opportunity to succeed if I tried my best. My mom, my dad, my brother; no one knew how to speak English. We had to get help from my aunt to find a house and fill in the application for attending school. I attended Strawberry Point Elementary School in San Francisco without knowing any English. I was scared, yet determined to succeed.
Growing up in an immigrant household in America, was difficult. I didn’t live, I learned to adapt. I learned to adapt to the fact that I did not look like any of my peers, so I changed. Adapted to the fact that my hair texture would never be like any of my peers, so I changed. Adapted to the fact that I was not as financially well off as my peers, so I changed.
This chapter can help young writers in English class with their papers in many different ways. For instance, Trimble gives examples on what a veteran writer does in order to make their writing interesting. He also gives out techniques on how you can get a reader’s attention or how you can fix your writing to make it readable instead of having nonsense. What makes this difficult for me as a writer is that I write what ever comes to my mind and it will not make sense. Another thing that makes it difficult for me as a writer is that I am not good at getting the readers attention and having him hooked on to my work.
As a teenager moving to a new country with a different culture, different language, and being thousands of miles away from everyone I grew up with was not an easy change, however, that was precisely what I did in January of 2013 when I came to the United States with my father. My whole world changed since, and shaped my way of thinking. From learning English, adjusting to a new culture, experiencing my first snow and finding my way in my new country, my life has been an exciting adventure. My parents brought me to America almost 5 years ago to have a better life, and to get a better education.
