The characteristics of the modern Northwest Coast tribes that struck me the most was the lifestyle that they live in reservations. There is really no difference between reservations large or small even though some reservations might have more resources then the other there is still vale of darkness over these reservations. The American government had begun to declare specific pieces of land located in the West as Native reservation in the 1850s and 1860s. The main reasons were to open up more land for settlers that were headed to the west and to distinguish and keep peace between these settlers and Indians.
