It was the early 21st century and the CRT computer monitors had given way to lighter and sleeker TFT – LCD’s. My father seemed excited as here was the right opportunity to take the apple of his eye around the world, or rather, bring her the world in a box, sitting right here in our living room. In no time, three large boxes were delivered home and took center stage in our lives. The electrician took care of the cabling, still broadband then, and with a click of a button I was transported to the beach, the highlands or wherever else I chose to be. The fascination of a fourth grader is hard to articulate. Besides, traversing the virtual universe, I was intrigued with the utilitarian software that came with the machine. Excel, Word, Power Point, made our lives easier and manageable. This revolutionary change came at a most impressionable time in my life and the impact it made has stayed with me since. In that, every time I’m asked my ambition in life, my answer remains consistent – a Computer Engineer.

There were times when I turned to her in exasperation and she would steer me towards positivity, remarking that success is a temporary destination. Her philosophy was that every step in itself was a position of success for a while until the time came to improvise. Then the struggle began again until we arrived at the next level.
