The first notable member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated that really sticks out to me is Umzae George Washington Carver. He was initiated in the Gamma Chapter in the year of 1918. To begin I selected him, because he was a very familiar name. I remember learning about Umzae George Washington Carver in the elementary and middle school. With creating over 100 different uses for the peanut, soybean, and sweat potato he was a very prominent African American man in the 1920s. Kwame Nkrumah. He was a member of the Mu Chapter at Lincoln University. I selected this respected man of Sigma, because he was the first president of the Republic of Ghana. Ghana became a member of the Commonwealth of Nations and was led to independence from Britain in the year of 1957 by Umzae Dr. Kwame Nkrumah who transformed the country into a republic. Umzae Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was an extremely hard working and determined individual. Umzae Dr. Kwame Nkrumah connected with me, because I have a lot of friends who are Ghanaian or of Ghanaian descent. I have recently begun to explore the African culture in an attempt to learn my roots. His role in Ghana gaining its independence was something that I knew. He is a member of the Zeta Chapter at Morris Brown College. I selected him because of his story. Umzae Hosea Williams was born to blind parents. On multiple occasions he was beaten and left for dead. Yet throughout all of these setbacks, he went to college, became a remarkable man of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated, and made a difference in the world as a civil rights activist. Umzae Hosea Williams has shown the qualities to persevere through whatever is thrown his way. This great man of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated organized and held a dinner for homeless men and women for over 25 years. He connects with me, because of the impact he has made. He is a man that is for the community and viewed himself about a part of the community rather than apart from it. That is someone that I aspire to be like. To give back. Also throughout my research I found that Umzae Hosea Williams did a lot of work with Dr. Martin Luther King Junior during the civil rights
