The fast food industry also hurts environments around farms in general. It has created an unsustainable cycle that farmers cannot escape. In order to feed themselves and their family, farmers play it safe and buy more fertilizer than needed. When the farmers do not use all of it, they must dispose of it, because that fertilizer will not be as effective next year, so they dump the fertilizer in the areas surrounding their farms. But what this causes is too much nitrogen in the environment because too much nitrogen can kill plants and throw the nitrogen cycle out of balance, in turn hurting the environment.
Manure and chemical filled lagoons are a common component of industrial farming. A colossal amount of waste is produced from COFAs, therefore it has to go somewhere. That somewhere would be the prior mentioned lagoons which are then sprayed or leaked into the soil. Contaminated soil can affect both ground and surface water. The runoff can go in two directions; either absorbed into the ground or washed into rivers or lakes in the surrounding area.

Since the 19th century, the number of wild horses free in the West have declined by 98%. The practices of removing American horses off public lands is decimating their numbers. Thousands of wild horses every year are being herded by helicopters and vehicles into holding pens.
Did you know that in factory farms, the majority of chickens, turkeys, and ducks have their beaks removed to prevent cannibalism? What about that egg-laying hens are sometimes starved up to 14 days, exposed to different light patterns, and not given water to shock their bodies into molting? Many people live their lives not knowing of the cruelties that occur in a factory farm. Last year I had an older friend that worked at a factory farm specifically for pigs. One day when I was visiting him, I asked how he liked his job that he had recently gotten hired on to.
Open-range ranching is where the cattle were branded and able to roam around freely and eat as much as they wanted. When the ranchers decided that they were healthy enough the cattle would be killed or sold for food, clothing, or other materials in order to make money for the rancher (Carnes and Garraty 388). It all began when the cattleman found out that Texas stock would not die throughout the winter and there was a great amount of food and land for the animals to live off of (Carnes and Garraty 388). To make this possible they needed a source of water nearby and by having that available gave the cattleman more control over their land. As a result, the stock was able to grow more abundantly over time.
Alternatives Factory farming is a major problem throughout the U.S.A that is more popular than one would think. Some ways to stop factory farming involves the people to do the work, like buying from humane meat companies. Other alternatives to stop factory farming involves the law to do the work, like banning gestation crates or requiring all agricultural animals to become free range. A second alternative is planting humane meat industries in local grocery stores, like Cub or Hivee, instead of in specific stores, like whole foods.
There is an important question many people today wonder; I found that there are several people who see how showing livestock affects kids in school and in life. I chose this topic because so many people think that showing livestock is just a waste of time and money, but they have no idea what it entails. Other people don’t realize that showing livestock isn’t about the money or just having a pet. I am writing this paper because everybody should know that showing isn’t about having a pet, it’s about gaining responsibilities and learning new things that can help you later in life. Showing livestock helps children go farther in life because it teaches them more responsibility, they work harder, and they never give up on their dreams.
With the United States having numerous amounts of health issues and food outbreaks yearly, it is safe to say that we need a hopeful idea for the future to bring healthy and natural foods. Many people believe industrial/factory farming should continue to increase, but it’s quite the contrary, industrial/factory farming needs to be put to end and the only type of farming that should be expanding is the system used in Polyface farm, which is holon farming. In the text, “The Animals: Practicing Complexity”, by Michael Pollan, he discusses Joel Salatins’ Polyface farm and its complex system. All the animals depend on each other and Salatin is basically imitating a natural ecosystem where there is no such thing as waste. However, in the text, “What

It was ruled that this puppy died from a severe respiratory disease which caused the air passages to become closed resulting in slow suffocation. It was later discovered that this puppy had been raised in a puppy mill.
A honey bees ' wings stroke 11,400 times per minute, making a distinctive buzzing noise (Delaplane). There are many things that people don’t know about bees. Such as when beekeeping started, the difference between hobbyist and commercial beekeepers. There are also different types of bees, different types of honey and different uses of honey. Most people are perfectly fine never encountering a bee or knowing anything about them.

The Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) is a policy concerning the safety of the food chain and the use of medicated feeds without a prescription from a licensed veterinarian. The antimicrobials in medicated feeds are causing a resistance to antibiotics in animals which could potentially transfer to humans once they consume the animal’s products. Creating conflict in whether or not feedlot or dairy operations need to have veterinarians prescribe medicated feeds before feeding it to food-producing animals. There are multiple issues that affect the producers causing myself to resent this directive. Since this was put into effect on January 1st, 2017 by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) there have been multiple conflicts regarding the new directive.
The chickens help clean up the cows waste and even fertilize the land with their own droppings. This way the soil is better than it was before and no chemicals were needed. “Animals on organic and ‘free range’ farms often endure the same cruel mutilations-such as debeaking, dehorning, and castration without painkillers- as animals on conventional factory farms… These animals are typically shipped on trucks through all weather extremes- usually without food, water, or rest-to the same slaughterhouses used by factory farms.
Introduction: Genetically modified organisms can be defined as organisms in which the DNA has been changed in a way that does not occur naturally by any reproduction procedure. The enviropig is just one of many organisms that they did experiments on to modify it to have specific (needed) outcomes. The reason for genetic modification is to be able to change a product or organism so that it deliver desirable traits. The enviropig was created to solve the problem of pigs not being able to absorb enough phosphorous from their diet, which then in its turn contributes to the larger factor of pollution.
Zoos have been around since the eighteenth century. A zoo is defined as a compound where wild animals are kept for viewing and studying. The purpose of a zoo is mainly for education and protection, preserving animal species that are either at a risk of becoming extinct or for increased collection size (Jamieson). Animals from around the world have been enclosed in an area where we can admire and study these fine creatures. However, many modern zoos around the world have introduced animal shows, petting and feeding sessions to attract more visitors in order to earn more money.
