One of the major disadvantages of the single-sex education is that it unintentionally promotes poor social skills and a poor social development. (Bigler, Signorella, 2011). When these schools segregate the students, they may think that their gender is inferior or better than the opposite. Not only that, the students will not develop vital social skill due to them not being able to mix with the opposite gender which may show its effects on the students in the near future. In the future, this can lead to problems in forming relationships between both genders when the students grow into adults. It is also believed that the females could not develop their masculine side and the male could not develop their feminine side. As a result, it creates less sympathy and comprehension towards the opposite sex. The social institution of education maintains inequalities through the demonstration of two of our assign readings. First, the reading Missing in Interaction by Myra and David Sadker is an essay that was based on how segregation exists in the classrooms and the impact it has on both boy and girls (Ore, 2011b; 305). Their main argument is that sexism occurs in the classroom without the teachers realizing it. Teachers tend to focus more on the boys than girls when a class discussion begins. “Between the Sexes, a Great Divide” written by Anna Quindlen, is an essay that talks about the differences between men and women, and how they see the world. There are three main groups that contribute financially to abstinence programs in America (CITE THIS). The first being the Adolescent Family Life Act (AFLA) of 1981, which was founded in opposition to the Title X Family Planning Program which provides contraception for low income families. The AFLA is the smallest monetary contributor, but is attributed with providing the ground work for abstinence programs at a federal level. Title V came about in 1996 as a stricter version of AFLA.
