George Washington made a bold decision for his Farewell Address to be an open letter of advice and warning to the American people for their long-term pleasure and security. Washington himself spoke of a nation with great unity. He had faith in the prosperity of the citizens, but was weary of the dangers of such a young republic. The overarching theme of his address was the preservation of the union. During this, we warned against the dangers of sectionalism and claimed that the connection between the Union and the Constitution must be cherished. He demanded, “The name of American, which belongs to you, in your national capacity must always exalt the just pride of Patriotism, more than any appellation derived from local discriminations.” Washington
Franklin Roosevelt uses pathos, ethos and logos all throughout his speech. “December 7th 1941- A date that will live in infamy.” This quote will forever be in the minds of Americans. The bombing of the Pearl Harbor is an event no one can forget and neither is Franklin Roosevelt’s speech. It was this that brought American into World War Two and changed history. Roosevelt’s use of both pathetical and logical statements was extremely effective is driving America to declare war on the Japanese Empire.

Monopoles were influencing Americans negatively and the federal and State powers could do nothing about it. The rich had control of almost all the wealth in the United States, and the middle class was not happy about it. As the fireworks explode in the night sky to celebrate Independence Day, “Born in the U.S.A.” by Bruce Springsteen plays loudly for the audience to hear. As the men, women, and children bellow out the chorus proudly, they never seem to grasp its intended meaning. By studying the appeals and irony used in Springsteen’s lyrics, it is easy to see how Springsteen’s message of the poor treatment of Vietnam War veterans is misconstrued by millions of listeners into American pride. Springsteen’s intended audience is a group made up of mainly white, blue collar Americans- a group not likely to accept criticism of America. Through unclear lyrics and a poorly selected audience, Springsteen’s hit “Born in the U.S.A.” is a rhetorical failure.
Roosevelt concluded his speech by beseeching a global society that would stand unified and oppose those who seek world domination, and the destruction of democracy. Theodore Roosevelt’s speech, Strength and Decency, included a variety of rhetorical strategies that allowed him to persuade educated, mature, and, strong men to become powerful and decent human beings. Roosevelt’s purpose of presenting this speech was to persuade the audience to behave like the strong men they are but with decency and manners because, in the 1900s, men behaved in a very manly fashion. However, men lacked manners and morality. Due to the very questionable propriety of men, Roosevelt was driven to address how men should act the way a real mature man would in order to further improve society. By using rhetorical strategies such as repetition, Christian appeal, and a serious tone, Roosevelt is able to show his audience how strength and decency go hand in hand.
In paragraph 1, it reads, “Not every man nor every government can have what he wants in a document of this kind. There are of course particular provisions in the Declaration before us with which we are not fully satisfied.” By saying this, Eleanor presents the rhetorical device pathos, because she uses inspirational words to grab attention and connect with the listeners in a way that relates to them. She also uses vivid language to truly intrigue the audience to compromise and work together to provide peace for the country.
In President Roosevelt’s speech, there are multiple rhetorical devices that can get a point across. Using these rhetorical devices, the audience may be able to become swayed by the main message being expressed. The goal of a speech is to catch the audience’s attention greatly and persuade them to gain similar beliefs on whatever is being spoken of. In Roosevelt’s speech, the mood expresses a ray of hope yet a feel of strictness.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt gave his “First Inaugural Address” on March 4, 1933 after he had been elected into office. Because he became president during the Great Depression, the speech focused on his plans to improve the state of America and claimed that the country could escape its economic crisis. Eight years later, on December 7, 1941, Japan attacked the United States’ military base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The following day, Roosevelt delivered his famous “Day of Infamy” speech, which claimed that America needed to declare war on Japan. By using ethos, parallelism, and logos, Roosevelt does a more effective job of supporting his claim in “Day of Infamy” than in his “First Inaugural Address”.
It has been said that it only takes one person, with one clear message, to change the world. In times of war, great world leaders have put this statement to the test, which each word spoken calling for an act of war or an act of peace. In Thomas Paine’s The Crisis No. 1, Paine is addressing the impending Revolutionary War, and the impending battle against General Howe. Similarly, in Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Pearl Harbor Address to the Nation, the President asks the American people to stand with him against the Japanese and join World War II. Both speeches call out to the American people to fight and protect their nation using facts and hard truths to persuade, while both Paine and Roosevelt use their own levels of personal connection and feelings
“I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” That one sentence changed my life, those thirty one words altered my decisions, the words “liberty” and “justice” shaped my future. To some, freedom, liberty, and independence are benefactions; others view them as excesses. But to me, those words signify duty, honor, and country. Everything granted to us is not free, we have to earn each and every aspect of the objects we have in life. In order for the people of this country to continue to relish the freedom and independence America stands for, one needs to stand out and sacrifice their time and effort to preserve it.
Many people when they hear the words “Fourth of July” they think about fireworks, cookouts, and sparklers! During the 1850’s it is a day that reminded many of the horrors and injustices in the world. On July 4, 1852 Frederick Douglass, a former American slave and an abolitionist leader, spoke in Rochester, New York about the affectation of celebrating independence. In his speech, “The Hypocrisy of American Slavery” he claims celebrating independence when there are slaves widespread is unethical. To convince the reader of his claim he uses rhetorical questions, word choice and anthesis in hopes to shed light and spark action on the wrongful situation.
In 1883, Theodore Roosevelt, gave his “Duties of American Citizenship” speech. The speech took place around the same time that the Civil Service Reform Act was passed. It was passed to prohibit government officials from soliciting campaign donations from yard workers. So, the overall purpose of Roosevelt 's speech was to persuade people to fulfill their duty as a citizen in the United States. He wanted them to stand up for their country, to be involved in politics, and to want to go the extra mile just to help others and the country as a whole. As I read this speech, there were five main points that stood out. They, along with the rest of the speech, explained what Roosevelt thought the ideal American citizen should look like.
Roosevelt used antithesis during his speech even though it was metaphorically weak. A typical example was in paragraph five (5). When he compared the risen of taxes and their inability to pay have fallen.
Through reading the Autobiography of Calvin Coolidge and pondering over its contents, I have come to love the ideals this president once foreign to me. I am able to identify with many family, educational, political, and life values exhibited in the book, and take great pride in the comparison of qualities with this historical figure.
