What is Search Engine Marketing (SEM)?
This might seem redundant to explain, as most people and businesses who consider Google certification courses will already be familiar with the basics of Search Engine Marketing. However, considering that the term has evolved in recent years as digital trends have evolved, a few clarifications might be in order:
Before, Search Engine Marketing (or SEM) meant the digital marketing process of gaining as much traffic and visibility on search engine as possible – mostly through paid digital marketing processes (such as PPC) and/or unpaid digital marketing processes (such as SEO). However, now, luckily, the exam is completely free for individuals to take. The catch, though, is that you have to pass two exams in order to be AdWords Certified, and that you need to score a grade above 80% in order to pass both exams.
There are three exams available: the Advertising Fundamentals exam, the Advanced Search exam, and the Advanced Display exam. You'll need to pass at least two of these exams in order to be certified, and the Advertising Fundamentals exam is a mandatory exam.

How to Take the Google AdWords Certification Exam
To take the exam, first sign in to Google Partners, go to the Certifications tab on the page (on the left), click on the “AdWords” option there, and then take the test directly. After you pass the first test, then complete the second test the same way. And voila, you now have a Google AdWords Certification in your account.
(Note: Preparation is necessary, and there's free content available online to help you prepare for these exams. And, if you fail either of these exams, you can retake the exams in 7 days or after a specified amount of time as defined by Google.)
