The U.S. could potentially “gain $41 over the lifetime of the generation born in 2010” if in the next 20 years if students improve their score in reading, math, and science by 25 points. Year-round school provides an efficient way to accomplish this goal to bring America more money (Granderson). America is no longer leading in the world’s smartest countries and it is having a negative impact on students and the economy. By implementing year-round school, test scores will sky rocket and bring in more money. Countries with more effective schooling from year-round education have fewer dropouts.
I would layout the flyers in the front office and throughout the school so that other teachers and parents could see and spread the word. I will hold an informational bilingual night open to all parents and other interested teachers of the lessons I hold in class that encourages both languages. Their home languages would have lessons about the cultures that last a week long. A Power Point would be created to inform parents their students are learning their home language yet are still learning the English language by doing other activities in the
No Child Left Behind obligated school districts in all states to ensure that all students are proficient. “After New York City’s reading and math scores plunged in 2010, many schools imposed extra measures to avoid being shut down, including daily two and a half hour prep sessions and test practice on vacation days.” (Is the Use”). Standardized tests measure only a small portion of what makes education meaningful, as recent studies have shown. Standardized testing creates disadvantages for students who do not perform well on tests, or do not have the background knowledge to complete questions effectively. Testing does not take into consideration the external factors that can affect a student.
Just because they are in their senior year teachers should see if that person is capable to read spell or write. Another thing is the students who puts their effort into school and still are not able to understand the subject then that will be different. For example, students with special disorders are the ones that will fall into that category. One of the many night students that sherry teaches said “I was a good kid and didn’t cause any trouble, so they just passed me along even though I didn’t read well and couldn’t write” (1). This example, shows that instead of the teachers using a method that gives her the power that she needs, students do as they please without much effort.
School is a place where you go to spend about half of your life learning about topics that simply do not interest you or that truly won’t help you in the future. The U.S government tells the teachers what they need to teach in their schools for the class curriculums, so that the students can learn a healthy amount of material. The best thing is that many high schools fail to teach their students important things. Many teachers just pass students along through their class, because they don’t want to hold them back and deal with them for another year, but soon enough most of us move onto college. I’ve seen many people fail during college, because their high school did not push them to try to achieve great grades.
Having only white teachers in the school minimizes the chance for Hispanic students to find a connection or a role model. In action two, the article suggested that the school could invite Hispanic graduates back as encouragement to the students. Reading about that sparked an idea in my head that a legitimate program could be established where dual-language Hispanic students in upper grades could make weekly visits to the lower grades to help with homework or class time. It would be similar to the Study Buddy program or the Chums program where a student in a higher grade serves as a one-on-one mentor to a struggling English language learner in a lower grade, whether that be Kindergarten or 10th grade. In addition, research shows students are doing better when they are in bilingual programs. Pac (2012) writes “Facilitating instruction in both heritage languages and English, bilingual education specifically improved language minorities’ educational access, self-esteem, and personal and professional achievements” (Pac 2012, p.195). Students feel more comfortable when they are studying in the environment with their peers who are in the same English level, and they are more willing to practice in the class. However, when emergent bilinguals have to speak with unfamiliar language in the class, students will feel shame to ask questions because they will think other students will laugh at them since they are the only one who does not understand questions, which make them have lower self-esteem. In New York City, there is a dramatic loss of bilingual program because it against the English-only movement.
College Admission abolish SATS By the time of junior year of high school, college is on every student 's mind. In May or June, students prepare to take the SATS and/or the ACTS. These are both standardized test colleges use as a part of their admission process. The tests are stressed to be a huge factor when determining if students will be accepted to universities. However, what if you found out your scores aren’t everything, and are actually ranked third in importance behind a student 's GPA and classes they take in high school (Adams 1)?
The student population has grown in Latino students by nearly half. I asked some of the children how long they had been with this school and 80% of them have matriculated from kindergarten to now. The theoretical approach being a dual language school expects students to be at least 80% proficient in Spanish by the time they finish the elementary program and proceed to middle school/ sixth grade. Although this school has become predominately Latino the education standards of learning Spanish is expected by all pupil that is to matriculate through this academic programs. With that in mind, facilitating a way for parents to increase their knowledge of community resources will aid them in the qualities it takes to groom a well-rounded child.
