Superman Overrated Superhero

Beowulf shares the same traits with as many other heroes I know about. For example, Beowulf 's willpower can be compared with Henry Cavill 's Superman (Man of Steel). In life people always have that one special person that look up to. To them they are by far and idol in their eyes. Just like a child growing, they always had that one superhero they would love to be and hope to be as brave as them. For example Superman, Batman, Wolverine, and the Hulk. Trying to get Mattie all the way out of the pit, Rooster attempted to put her on his back and climb out, but he could not. “He tried to climb the rope hand over hand with his feet against the sides of the pit but he made only about three pulls and had to drop back down. Our combined weight was too much for him” (213). Had Rooster been a perfect hero, like Superman, he would have been able to pull Mattie all the way out of the ditch. Superman’s Song, written as a eulogy, expresses more than respect for a fallen Superhero; it voices Robert’s grief, thereby creating pathos, at the passing of a great man: “And sometimes I despair the world will never see another man like him.” Roberts expresses not only his own “despair” but the “world's” despair of having lost Superman. Honest men are rare. Rarer yet are men of virtue, men of integrity, and men of compassion. Superman was such a man. He had the “strength” to “smash through any bank,” but would not. His morals remained intact. Instead, he strove to help those around him and worked selflessly to fight against the evils. It would be almost impossible to find someone that selfless today. Everyone is so indulged in getting the best for themselves, and wanting to see themselves on the top, that they tend not be compassionate in the way Superman was. Therefore grief and sorrow are depicted over the fact that the world would never see another Superman, especially with all the good men going into hiding.

When Superman was little he was just an alien that landed on earth, but now he is an icon of goodness to the world. He has inspired the world with his high moral values and has taught us many things about justice and life. He has persuaded countless people to continue working hard and giving everything they can despite of the odds. He is the most powerful person on earth and yet he is humble and honest, two great characteristics of a leader. Superman embodies the ideals of a nation. Just like Odysseus, Superman is strong, compassionate, and brave. Superman is able to pick up a plane with arm, now that is what you call super human strength. In The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me by Sherman Alexie, Alexie states “A smart Indian is a dangerous person, widely feared and ridiculed by Indians and non-Indians alike” (Alexie 364). I would have to disagree with this statement. He is making it sound like just because he is a minority that received somewhat of an education, he should be feared by others. I believe that anyone who is smart and forceful in a community is dangerous because they have the willpower to go to any lengths to uphold their beliefs. On the other hand, I also believe that just because you are smart, you don’t necessarily have to be feared. I understand the Alexie is stating that Indian’s are tough, but this does not equate to being feared in a community.

Throughout the years, Beowulf has been compared to many modern day super heroes. However, the super hero that Beowulf is most easily compared to is Superman. Although there are multiple differences amongst these two characters, there are a few similarities as well. Such similarities exist in appearances, as well as supernatural qualities. Moreover, Beowulf and Superman are both portrayed as heroes for their time. Both Beowulf and Superman travel far and wide to defeat villains, save people, and encourage others. Their appearances are similar as well. Superman and Beowulf are dry, muscular, and strong. In fact, most people during their time would have considered them handsome.

A Superhero is not judged by the power he has,but only by the choices he makes. In the essay,”Superman and Me” by Sherman Alexie, the author uses an extended metaphor to explain his relationship with the fictional character Superman. Alexie uses many things in his life to compare himself to Superman. Although Alexie may not be seen as a hero with actual superpowers, he demonstrates the qualities of a superhero in different ways. Alexie is seen as someone that almost resembles an alien in the eyes of his society. Most of Alexie’s comparisons with himself and Superman are figurative. Sherman Alexie and Superman have much more similar qualities than one might realize.

In the story the joy of reading Superman and me Sherman Alexie tells an emotional story of both hardship and success. He shares his struggles of being a poor Indian kid destined to fail, but he had a desire to be persevere he wanted to be more than the stereotypical uneducated Indian on a reservation and was determined to do so. It is Captain America’s duty to not just protect the American people, but to lead and guide them. He is the face of all that America stands for from his star spangled suit to his values and heroism. Captain America symbolizes freedom and protection. I feel like he 's often understood to symbolize America, but he stands for more than that. He had never run from a fight and always insisted on standing up for himself and his beliefs. His ability to keep fighting for what he believed in, no matter the consequences, is a strong characteristic of his. He proved that nobody should ever give up hope because giving up is never an option for something you truly believe in.

A bite and a costume can change someone’s life extremely quick. Spiderman as a reference, was bitten by a spider that granted him with special abilities. Only he must keep it as secret from society. The best superheroes have awesome costumes which help them maintain two separate identities. They also have an amazing skill component of supernatural abilities which enhance their civilian identities. Superman, Wonder Woman, Hulk, Spiderman, are all perfect examples of the best superhero.

Superheroes usually have a bad childhood, where they would persevere through adventures and eventually become stronger to protect the people. We can draw parallels from Greek mythology where we have the story of Perseus. Perseus is a prototypical hero quester of classical literature which we can compare to Superman which is also the prototypical hero quester of the superhero age. Superman and Perseus were both orphaned shortly after birth, where after reaching maturity, both sets out on a journey to find their purpose in adulthood. For Superman, it is how he realises his identity and purpose on Earth before he takes on his mantle on Earth as Superman. Both Superman and Perseus are model heroes, with noble values which are not too complex. Their enemies are always on the side of evil where their actions rendered them inhuman, and the heroes always fought for the side of the good. By comparing both stories, they are similar with identical themes which can make superheroes our modern

society's beliefs, regulations, and restrictions. There are heroes for both men and women of all ages. Every society has their own heroes, whether they are heroes because of their wealth, political career, war triumphs, athletic achievements or social leads.
