Texas has always been very diverse in regards to our political cultures. These cultures have transformed over the years which makes Texas a hard place to govern. According to Daniel Elazar, each state is associated with a political culture classification scheme of moralistic, individualistic, and traditionalistic cultures. By definition, political culture is the shared values and beliefs about the nature of the political world that give us a common language that we can use to discuss and debate ideas. (21) Texas’s political culture is a combination of many political elements.
The Social Peculiarities of Texas Political Culture. Texas is one of the fastest-growing states. Nowadays it became more culturally diverse than ever. As a result, the increasing diversity has a significant impact on the political culture. Currently the Native-American population is less than one-half of percent in Texas, while during the nineteen century there were at least twenty-three groups of Native-Americans.

Universities and junior colleges are places where we learn different things and ideas from the different spheres and influences from our professors and instructors. These are also a place where we should value different opinions from both sides, in order to form a position in where you stand in your beliefs as a person, a balance opinion should be our utmost priority in order to have a constructive dialogue between both sides of the political spectrum. However, not validating and listening to the opinion of others can create a divisive rhetoric, where we end up ridiculing and criticising one another because of his/her political views. Before this course I did not know much about Texas’s government and how it operated. I had made some connections from my prior knowledge, from taking another government course. These connections that I made was the types of elections held and polls used in each election. This course has allowed me to better understand how the Texas government operates, which I didn’t know before. I now know that the governor of Texas is Greg Abbott, we have a bicameral legislature, and there are 31 members in the senate and 150 in the house.
Although the first amendment guarantee’s freedom of speech, the guarantee is not absolute. There should be an expectation to the first amendment. Another aspect of freedom of speech is expressive conduct (such as flag burning). The supreme court has grappled with whether laws banning expressive conduct are permissible under the first amendment. This court is in favor of Texas because, is it not right to burn a flag, with military people died to protect our flag, it is a symbol of freedom, and it will cause more problems in the world.
According to Steve Chapman, the Texas flag is seen as a unique, honorable symbol for Texans. Its design is one that can be distinguished from afar and is one of the elements that Texans are proud of. In addition, the flag is the only flag that can be flown at the same height as the United States flag! However, what makes the Texas flag so distinct?
The Texas Longhorns The University of Texas is one of the greatest schools in the country. The University of Texas has had a great history dating back to when it first became a school. The school itself has many traditions celebrated each and every year, mostly during special events. Their sports program is one of the best in the country starting with the Texas Longhorns football team which is ranked as the most valuable school in college football.
As you can perceive, unlike Campus, with smaller class sizes Haysville High gives each and every student an opportunity to have one on one time with their teachers. To put it differently, Campus High is overpopulated, and the school seemed “crammed.” For instance, there are countless classrooms at Campus that are so full; they do not even have enough desks for the students. Thus, Haysville High is diminutive enough to focus attention on every student, and makes all of us feel accepted. For all these reasons, Haysville High’s environment is more conducive to learning than Campus is.
An example of this, is a recent conversation I had with one of my high school history teachers. He was critical of me for taking a cultural diversity class at a local college for dual-enrollment. My teacher did not see the value of the course, and he directly said the course was, “horse-crap”, and “propaganda being promoted by those African countries”. Not only do I disagree with his perspective, I am eager to embrace the openness of the Kilachand Honors College. Kilachand Honors College will fulfill my academic goals by giving me access to scholars with an increase breadth of knowledge.
Political culture establishes the backdrop against which politics unfold, it establishes the outer limits of what is possible, or even probable in the political realm. Texas political culture can be described as traditionalistic and individualistic. Texas traditionalist political culture believes in the values that policies are designed to preserve social order in the state, politicians come from society’s elite, and politicians have a family obligation to govern. While on the other hand, individualistic political culture believes that government should be limited when it comes to the lives of the public, individual rights of the citizens should be the main focus of a government rule, and a stronger support of personal politics rather than elitism. Texas also has a strong populism influence.
The History of Texas Political Culture. The history of Texas includes the periods of stability as well as the moments of tension, discordance and sharp changes. Most of the Texans have only the basic knowledge of the political history and governmental institutions. The key views of the citizens can be described as a political myth. A myth can be interpreted as a certain model of truth that can modify the moral and spiritual values of the particular society.
Students not only need to gain the knowledge for the field that they will be working in, but more importantly they need the knowledge of basic life skills on how to think and react to life experiences. It is important for people to understand that knowledge is power, and knowing that it’s not all about you is one of the best realizations one can have. We are all here to collectively work together for some type of common goal. No one person is more valuable than the other. So the next time we are waiting in line in Walmart, we shouldn’t be cursing about how the cashier is too slow, or that they need to open more lines because we are in a hurry.
Furthermore, while safe spaces can be hubs of conversation, they are however, conversations between like-minded students (Source C). The aforementioned editor, Jonathan Sperling, reiterates the exigency in which college students must experience the plethora of distinct views, opinions, and beliefs of other pupils, in order to gain a well-rounded perspective on different subject matters.
