According to CBSnews.com, ¨During the 2021-2022 school year, more than 1,600 books were banned from school libraries.¨ Looking at this number with no context might not seem like a lot, but each year more and more books go unread due to book censorship laws. After reading the novel, the Handmaid's tale, most high schoolers can attest while it may not be the most traditional book we have read in school, it should not be banned.
There are several reasons as to why school systems should keep it in the curriculum. For starters it helps students learn and understand that no matter how crazy it may sound, we as a society cannot stear away from our morals because anything is possible. Banning a book will make people want to read it more so ether way people would find a way to read the book. The Handmaid's Tale is quite controversial and against some peoples morals/beleifs so teaching it in classrooms as part of the curriculum is a hot topic. Although there is no

There are many reasons as to why The Handmaid's Tale should be taught in high schools. There is an article called ¨Why I banned "The Handmaid’s Tale" — and why we need it more than ever¨ where a teacher talks about how she stopped including the book in her classes but how she realized the influence it actually has on students. It also talks about the issue being addressed is important because the book the Handmaid's tale discusses/highlights a lot of taboo and controversial topics. Most feel as though talking about certain topics, though some may be more controversial, is necessary for people, escpially students to learn and talk about. The teacher talks about how her students can learn from the book and tie the lessons from it into their own life situations/problems and recorded the observations and impact she saw in their
Many books are challenged in the 21st century and banned for their content, some of these include The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Animal Farm, and Fahrenheit 451. Many of the reasons given for banning are the same. The reasons include violence, language, symbols, and religion. This makes it very difficult for educational professionals; which books should be taught and which ones should be banned, when does protection become unnecessary censorship? Although Fahrenheit 451 shows some dark themes such as banning books, disregard for human life, and suicide, it should be included in the school curriculum because it shows the dystopian future that awaits the world if the events in the book become a reality.
This is both good and bad. There are some books that are unfit for children and high school students, however, this again can be abused. Certain books that have been pulled off school’s bookshelves include: A Catcher in the Rye written by Harper Lee, Fahrenheit 451 written by Ray Bradbury and To Kill a Mockingbird written by J.D. Salinger. A Catcher in the Rye has been challenged by schools for many reasons not limited to but including: Anti-White, obscene, excessive vulgar language, sexual scenes, immoral issues (Banning).
Schools will at times ban certain books due to age restrictions, or will if it doesn't go with the school's intentions. This happens to popular author Stevin King with many of his books being banned from schools. As Mr.King describes” If you are not careful and diligent about defending the right of your children to read, there won't be much left, especially at the junior-high level where kids begin to develop a lively life of the mind, but books about heroic boys who come off the bench to hit home runs in the bottom of the ninth and shy girls with good personalities who finally get that big prom date with the boy of their dreams. Is this what you want for your kids, keeping in mind that controversy and surprise -- sometimes even shock -- are often the whetstones on which young minds are sharpened?” Because of how schools teach and the compulsory subjects you learn, having the opportunity to learn something on your own without the censorship of the school will help students in the long run.
One book, such as Fahrenheit 451, being banned from a school library could lead to the entire collection of books being examined with possible removal. While restricting certain books in school libraries doesn’t ban them from public libraries, it does significantly reduce the amount of students that will have access to them. Banning certain books from a school’s curriculum harms teachers just as much as it does students. Teachers have to curve their lesson plans around which books are deemed banned, inhibiting the way they are able to reach and engage with their students. This limits the potential educational value of lessons.
and i used three different texts below from the articles I got. Then, I decided to use these three texts from each of the articles because two of them mostly talked about decisions people came up during the 1950s and now with to decide whether they should ban books depending on their views of what’s right or wrong. This text tells us that there is no point in banning books because many kids these days are aware of sex, gender, violence etc. However the Keller high school is considering banning these types of books with sexual, violence or anything that could be inappropriate for the school district.
Not only does banning books violate authors' rights, restricting them from freedom of speech, but it also violates the students' rights to "receive and express ideas" (Webb). Many people who think certain books deserve to be banned do not agree with or dislike the themes present in the books. For example, as of 2020, the top five reasons for banning books were sexual content, offensive language, being unsuited to the age group, religious viewpoints, and LGBTQIA+ content. The authors who decide to have these themes in their book are utilizing their freedom of speech. If someone were to take that away, it would be unconstitutional.

Ironically, Fahrenheit 451 is one of the most banned books in American schools. The book was seen as evil for ideas like opposing the suppression of freedom by parties that presumed they had all the answers. Books such as Fahrenheit 451, 1984, Brave New World, The Giver, and The Hunger Games have been banned in schools, and they all explore the themes of suppressing freedom, information, and intellectual thinking. Prohibiting these books will only lead less thought; it will lead to the ultimate demise of society. If we do not learn from them, we will become them.
A parent or the student should be the one who decided whether or not the book is appropriate. Also, when a child is sheltered from the world, a book with just a bit of adult material could help them understand what really happens. It could prepare them so when they do become older and get a job, the world doesn’t put them into complete shock. Taken from Common Reasons for Banning Books, “…it is important that the reader makes his/her judgments on the book.” To elaborate on this, another person shouldn’t tell a student what and what not to read.
First, this text states, “Children should not be exposed to sex, violence, drug use, or other inappropriate topics” (Procon.org). To explain, parents are banning books from schools because they do not want their children to be exposed to these inappropriate topics. Moreover, banning these inappropriate topic books would be a great deal for parents and their children. Furthermore, the same text states that “Keeping books with an inappropriate content out of libraries protects kids, but does not stop people from
Banned Books are books that are prohibited by law or to which free access is not permitted by other means. Banning books is against the writers right for freedom of speech, which is the first amendment. Students have the right to read, reading is not illegal, so why ban books? If a reader is mature enough to handle some curse words or bad behavior then they should be able to read banned books. Some people believe books should not be banned in schools/libraries but just because you do not like it does not mean it should be taken away, that is the authors freedom of speech.
In some cases books were banned from schools because parents believed there kids should not be opened to certain topic in the stories. Another issue is students have been sent home to read books for certain classes that talk about touchy subjects. For example, religion and magic. Parents
Every child deserves a proper education. Banned books are depriving students of a well rounded, culturally aware, literary education because of the culture that is discarded, the history that is being withheld, and the education that young people could get through these banned books. The point of history is to learn from it and learn from others mistakes, but how can we do that if we are not allowed to learn it. As teachers shouldn’t you be teaching us how to make judgment calls like understanding that Mark Twain was a racist, but a man of his time and that doesn’t change him being an amazing writer. We cannot learn things such as that if we cannot even read most of Mark Twain’s books.
