Achievement is extremely important and tends to be important throughout life, whether it be work or school. While trying to achieve a certain thing in life, an adolescent will have noncognitive factors to face. Some achievements can take longer than others and you may not want it to be that way, but the delay of gratification can be worth the way. Steinburg states “Similar disparities exist in the world of work: Most youth make the transition from school to work without a great deal of difficulty, but a significant number experience frustrating unemployment” (Steinburg 321). Many high school students find out that school is not for them so they decide to go straight into the workforce. I had many guy friends in high school that went straight to pipeline for work, and most of the girls went to college to pursue a degree. My school performance and academic achievement did achieve my parents’ goal that they had set for me. My educational attainment is thirteen years plus of attending school. Every year we would have to take some kind of National Assessment of Educational Progress for our government to track our achievements. The text states “Only a handful of students, at any age, or in any subject area, score at a level that is designated “advanced” or “superior,” whereas large proportions of students score in the lowest category “below basic” (Steinburg 339). In the math part of our NAEP I would receive advanced in that part of the testing and our school would give us medals: gold for advanced and silver for proficient.
