In today 's society we are exposed to many varieties of food that can have both positive and negative effects on the health of our bodies. People generally care about their bodies and want to live a healthy lifestyle, which is why it is crucial to educate people about the positive effects that eating a healthy diet can have on the body. Healthy eating is important to allow the body to be nourished and run properly, as well as fight off sickness and diseases. The foods put into the body can affect cognitive thinking, bodily functions, and the overall health and appearance of the body.
The foods put into the body play an important role in how our brain functions. Healthy food will allow the brains to thrive, while unhealthy foods can cause harm to the brain. Different foods can act as brain boosters and improve intelligence, alertness, focus, and memory. Acetylcholine is a key messenger in the brain which keeps brain cells active. Vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower activate acetylcholine which allows for improved memory. Researchers found people who eat these do better than peers on memory tests (Carter, 2012). By consuming a large amount of vegetables per day, it boosts memory and protects the brain from memory loss as the body ages.
A healthy diet allows the body to be nourished and get through the day with an active brain, without feeling tired or drowsy. Those with healthy diets have an improved chance of getting good grades in academic environments.
In her article “Food as Thought: Resisting the Moralization of eating,” Sociologist Mary Maxfield claims that food is neither moral nor immoral, therefore, everyone can eat whatever they desire. Maxfield feels that everyone should trust their body and allow their mind to decide on what our body needs intake. On a daily basis our body needs the proper nutrients to function. But too much or too little nutrients can cause many illnesses or other problems that can be harmful and damaging to our body. However, Maxfield ignores the fact that eating whatever we want we may suffer the consequences of negative side effects.

One’s diet is based upon their choices, but even then there are many controversial views upon what is healthy and what is not. Two essays that I read uniquely present their views on this topic. In recent decade, the United States has seen supermarkets continuously get filled with packages labeled with things like “Low sodium” or “No Trans Fats.” Companies stick these labels on their food to match the current fads of what is good for you and what is not. In his essay Unhappy Meals, Michael Pollan advocates a return to natural and basic foods, and deplores nutritionism. Pollan argues that nutritionism does not actually tell people what is healthy or not, and that the only way to be sure you are eating healthy is to eat natural, fresh food.

Children learn when their brain is stimulated. If children are sitting at home just carelessly watching a television series that is not stimulating their brain, there are many things that can add as a factor into why childhood obesity is affecting their cognitive development. After finishing a meal, children may be compelled to just lay down, however, to get more brain stimulation it is best to maybe go for a walk or partake in some other form of activity.
