Looking up in an effort to make some eye contact with her friends, she was met with the black hair adorning the top of their heads. But, alas, all she saw were heads bowed down. Their backs hunched over their respective gadgets. The harsh light of their smart phones hitting their eyes with an intensity unlike any other, holding them captive, seemingly hypnotising them into oblivion. This may seem like a far-fetched scenario out of an insane novel about a modern post-apocalyptic world to some but to the majority, it is a scary reality that hits a little bit too close to home. Technology can be likened to a poisoned chalice. The downsides of technology are often pushed under the carpet in favour of its advantages until it becomes too big to ignore. Just take a look around us. What was once supposed to ease the entire process of communication is now the very thing that hampers effective communication. People nowadays are so obsessed with living the perfect life with the perfect Instagram pictures and the perfect Snapchat stories and the perfect Facebook status updates that we’ve begun ignoring the important things in life. To us, spending fifteen minutes finding the perfect shot of our food is acceptable but sitting down and spending that time having a heart-to-heart talk with each other is unthinkable. Technology has snatched away the reins of our life. Hashing out our differences has become a rarity nowadays. How many times has violence, be it physical or mental, been seen as a perfectly acceptable way to resolve conflicts? This twisted worldview that is technology’s doing doesn’t only exist on a personal scale. No, on the contrary, it extends internationally
