Transformational leadership is part of a “new leadership” paradigm. Transformational leadership is a process that transforms and changes the followers. Transformational leadership is not just for the follower, when the leader engages with the follower and creates a bond with them, both the leader and follower benefit from it. The leader takes into concern values, ethics, standards, and long-term goals, and tries to assess the follower’s motives, satisfy their minds, and treats them as human beings. Transformational leadership has four factors idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration. Leaders are to provide a supportive climate and to act as advisors and coaches. Followers are to grow through their own personal issues. Todd would make a perfect example for this. Throughout the movies Todd was a bit of a coward who would never stand up for himself or anything he believed in. This was until the end of the movie when Mr. Keating was forced to leave the school. Right before Mr. Keating left the room Todd gets over his coward ways and stands up for Mr. Keating. Todd stood on top of his desk and yelled out “Oh Captain! My Captain!” and would not sit down when instructed to by Headmaster Nolan. This lead to each of the Dead Poet Society members doing the same thing to glorify their old teacher Mr. Keating. Todd losing his roommate Neil to suicide was a personal challenge that help Todd get over his coward ways. Inspirational motivation uses symbols and emotional appeals. The leader is to inspire their followers and have high expectations for them. Neil’s father Mr. Perry would be good example for this. Mr. Perry holds high expectations for Neil to become a doctor and does not let anything come in between that. Neil does not want to be a doctor but is inspired to become one because he sees how much it means to his mother and father. Mr. Perry uses emotional appeals telling Neil that he becoming a doctor means a lot to his mother. Also telling his son that he is providing him with options that he never
