The trait theory of leadership was first discovered in mid 1800s. It is closely tied to the great man theory whereby leaders are thought to be born and only those who were born with correct traits and quality are suited to leadership (Lee, 2014). It is a line of research which examine which characteristics we should pursue to lead effectively. The most common traits to leaders are intelligence, determination, integrity, self-confidence and sociability. However, different study shows that there are other traits such as knowledge, responsibility, emotional control, courage and trustworthiness to be linked to effective leaders. It is somewhat overwhelming because there are more than a dozen of traits but not one is ideal for all types of situations. Since there are many possible traits, there is a disagreement on which traits are more important to be an effective leader. Also, this theory assumes people are born with that special trait, therefore people without it should give up (Lee, 2014). Besides that, MLK is an incredible transformational leader. Like its name, transformational leadership is about transforming and making an impact on an issue or person (Spahr, 2013). This theory assumes that the leaders can influence followers to accomplish more than what is needed for the good of the company. As a transformational leader, he sets a vision for himself and the people to work towards to. His “I Have A Dream” shed a light on the importance of civil rights in America. Also, he walks the talk instead of only talking the talk. For example, he stuck to his principles by not engaging in any violent actions towards his oppressors (Toren, 2014). Since MLK follow through what he promises, his message was even more creditable to his endless supporters, which made him such an inspirational leader (Rosebush, 2015). Most importantly, a transformational leader has authenticity. MLK was authentic in committing to his ultimate mission. He did not do it for any personal gain. His integrity inspires his followers to take action. For instance, during tough times, MLK would encourage people through his speeches. “And if America is to be a great nation, this must become true.” (MLK, 264). Martin Luther King Jr. was a recognized activist in terms of supporting complete freedom for African Americans. He was a well known author and public speaker who served as a shred of hope for many during the dark times in which racial prejudice was exercised.
Martin Luther King also demonstrated leadership ability when he also put his well-being on the line and not only took part of the civil rights marches but led them. He inspired others to follow because he made a personal commitment for his cause. The inspiration and the hope he gave was to all people not just one race. He gave people hope that one day that all people will be treated equally and be judged by their character. Martin Luther King was defiant as his home was bombed in 1956 and he continued with his dream showing his never give up attitude.
The Man with a Dream Martin Luther King Jr. famously said, “I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” He was one of America’s most influential civil rights leaders to ever exist. He was very passionate about his progression of nonviolent protesting and raised plenty awareness towards the media of racial inequalities eventually working towards a significant change that would change the world forever. Martin Luther King Jr. positively affected the world by becoming the leader of the civil rights movement and bringing racial acceptance to the U.S. through nonviolent protest. King was very inspired by India’s revolutionary civil rights leader, Gandhi.
He also encouraged others to speak out about racism and equality. Martin Luther King Jr help shape the United States to what it is today. I think Martin Luther King Jr. is mixed with two hero archetypes: one being a perfect hero and the other one being a misfit. He is a perfect hero because because he has good morals.
Those individuals who were believed to have these inherent skills were people of very influential status, wartime heroes and those of great wealth. The people who emerge or are most picked to lead have distinctive drives and character profiles (Nicholson, 2013, p.16). Leadership Thought Development from 1900 – 1970 The thought of leadership evolved from the Great Man Theory to Trait Theory and Behavior Theory. The trait theory focuses on identifying distinctive personality traits and characteristics that are associated to successful leadership.
The leader I chose was Martin Luther King. He fought for equal rights. The I have a dream Speech reaffirmed the commitment to non-violent resistance, standing one’s ground for one’s God-given rights, the basis for human dignity and strength for all, regardless of race, religion, or color. Martin Luther King displays charismatic leadership. Charismatic leadership has generally been defined in terms of the effects the leader has on followers, or in terms of the relationship between leaders and followers.
He grew up with a deeply rooted determination to obtain equal rights for all American citizens. He led many protests and gave extremely motivating speeches that eventually made him the most known Civil Rights leader. “Martin Luther King Jr. emerged as the head of a movement for justice and equality that branched out from Montgomery and swept through the south” (ramsees7). From 1954-1968 one of the most memorable movements in history took place and will not be forgotten is the civil rights movement. Martin Luther King Jr. is one of the many greats remembered and recognized in the movement for being an influential leader of his time. Having given over 2000 speeches, MLK(Martin Luther King) has one particular speech that stands out from the many and it is his “I Have A Dream” speech. MLK’s message being about peace, unity, fairness and freedom for and to all people shines through in this speech.
Wherever human beings are accumulated together in large numbers, they need leadership. Even a school needs a principle to mentor and escalate the school’s rank. Armies need generals to lead them to a courageous victory. Civilians need governments, captains of industry and intellectual leaders of thought as well. However, There are characteristics common to most great leaders that can be picked out.
He became a leader for African Americans in America but he also was on his way to becoming a world figure who would never be forgotten. In his speech Martin Luther King Jr stated, “The negro still is not free”. “Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God’s children”. He believed that God made all of his children equal and that the power of God stood strong and his religious faith is one of the reasons that he stood up for what he believed in. Today, leadership is considered to be more art than science. Equally observable is that those who engage in leadership invoke a variety of leadership styles and traits that can vary greatly, and yet can be equally successful in a variety of situations. No one could deny the tremendous leadership skills of Martin Luther King, but at the same time, for example, do not highlight the skills and success of General Schwarzkopf in crushing the army of enemies. As is generally known, the personal motives affect the leadership preferences. For example, some people choose adventurous and strict leadership style, while the others prefer peaceful and continuous.

He played a very big role in ending segregation of African Americans in the U.S.(Biography, 2018).
Trait theory is an expansion of the grand man theory by defining what makes a leader great. A great leader should show honesty, competence, courage, intelligence broadmindedness and inspire. A great leader should also be forward-looking, imaginative and straightforward. If anyone possesses these traits, they are thought to have been born with the characteristics.
This paper will examine the three leadership theories, identify how they apply to my practice, and explore how these theories interact with each other. The Trait Leadership Theory is based on the belief that a person is born with special traits contributing to natural leadership abilities. Studies of famous historical leaders have been used to identify various traits for this theory. Although the list of traits differs from study to study, there are five major traits that are consistent throughout most studies.
