MLK: The Trait Theory Of Leadership

All of our great leaders had one thing in common. Leadership. All of our great leaders have a different approach. Leaders have to have great attitude, they have to know what they want, and they have to always be accepting of the truth. Being a leader doesn’t mean being a President or a Vice President, people like Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass made a huge impact on the abolitionist movement, and they were fugitive slaves!

Clara Barton is one of the nursing leaders that shaped history (Kerfoot 1998). Clara Barton will be the main focus of this assignment as she was a remarkable woman who started off as an educator and then a clerk and then a nurse and then one of the founders of Red Cross in America. In a time when women were not educated and were not even offered jobs she worked side by side with men. She was from the Not for Profit Sector. Her field was Nursing and she tackled with providing healthcare to those in natural disasters or war.

King taught me and others that to really change the world you have to be kind, patient, and most of all you have to respect others. Although it took years Martin Luther finally gained the rights that black Americans deserved. He did it peacefully and did not raise his fists. If I wanted to change the world, all I have to do is follow Martin Luther King’s example and work hard. After all, anything can happen if you work for it.

Cool Hand Luke showed many rebellious attitudes throughout his incarceration on the chain gang. This rebellious attitude could be an insight to the human spirit as it calls out to never give up and to be persistent in what one believes. The idea of bucking the system should be handled with intelligence and great care as it is always dangerous going against the masses.

Out of the two personal appeals MLK used, I would say he mainly used pathos. This is because if you can reach the good in people you can truly move them. Dr. King realized this and often exploited it. He was a very good persuader and could twist your emotions at will. This is why his speeches were so powerful and why he’s famous. Using your emotions against your mind was one of his greatest tactics. He appeals to logic very well, however he has strings on your emotions like a puppeteer. Stupid people you can’t reason to with logic because they always will make something up that avoids the facts. For these reasons King was forced to appeal to their emotions. The thought of leadership evolved from the Great Man Theory to Trait Theory and Behavior Theory. The trait theory focuses on identifying distinctive personality traits and characteristics that are associated to successful leadership. The definitions of leadership appearing in the first three decades of the 20th century emphasized control and centralization of power (Northouse, 2016, p.2). By using the rhetorical features, MLK’s speech reached a different level of effectiveness for his audience. Using credibility, authority, trustworthiness and similarity to build a relationship by using evidence, MLK achieved ethos. Then by stating his values and creating imagery achieved but hos vocabulary he effective used pathos. Finally, by his clarity, goals, evidence and consistency, MLK appropriately reached his audience logical and effectively using logos. Martin Luther King Jr. is remembered for his great speeches, accomplishments and his leadership skills, but also for the sincerity of his heart for the freedom and unity of all people. The hope and dream is still valid today in America and Martin Luther King’s paved pathway continues to be built off of and honored today. It is a path we as America can look back on, learn from, and continue to be inspired by today thanks to MLK’s

Martin Luther King Jr. famously said, “I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” He was one of America’s most influential civil rights leaders to ever exist. He was very passionate about his progression of nonviolent protesting and raised plenty awareness towards the media of racial inequalities eventually working towards a significant change that would change the world forever. Martin Luther King Jr. positively affected the world by becoming the leader of the civil rights movement and bringing racial acceptance to the U.S. through nonviolent protest.

The most important decision of a leader is the style of leading they decide to use when inspiring others, or providing a vision for the future. By looking at the past, it is proven that some leadership styles are guaranteed to be more effective than others. The leadership style of Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X during the Civil Rights provides significant evidence of how different styles of leading can turn out to be a major success or defeat. Malcolm X’s leadership style included using violence to protest against violence and unequal rights, as well as supporting the segregation of African Americans and the whites. Martin Luther King’s style included nonviolent marches and protests against violence, and peacefully fighting for integrating

When you think of a good leader you think of someone who can influence and lead people. Good leaders do the right things for the people their leading and fight for whats right. Dr.Martin Luther King Jr. is a good leader because he fought for equal rights, he was a educated pastor, and he lead a movement that left behind a legacy that will be remembered forever. He played a very big role in ending segregation of African Americans in the U.S.(Biography, 2018). With all his great accomplishments he was able to be a great leader of this movement.

Its hard being a great leader, there were many leaders before us that we have to look up to and see what we have to do to do better than what they did. Qualities Leader possess to make things happen. Fredrick Douglass didn’t just wait around to see what would happen if he did this or if he did that. He took action to freeing all the slaves and writing a book about his life. Douglass wanted to change what he had grown up knowing his whole life. Fredrick wanted to be the change. One persons with courage is a majority. Harriet Hubman was so brave that she freed slaves so that they can have a better life out of slavery. Hubman was so courage that she never gave up on the slaves when things didn’t go her way. President Kennedy’s moon speech at Rice University came at a time of high uncertainty regarding technology and the threat of war. Kennedy’s emotive speech aimed to lift and inspire those who feared the worst and to encourage the population to grow and achieve their greatest potential. The ‘moon speech’ will be analysed by uncovering key components of the speech that created a lasting impression on the authors of this report. It is important to firstly explore and identify the traits and attributes of leadership exhibited by President Kennedy in this speech. Additionally, a discussion amongst group members will be necessary to ascertain how and why this speech was inspiring, and whether this speech could be considered as the greatest speech

There have been a variety of theorists who have tried to understand how good leaders acquire their skills and whether the components which make up a successful leader are hereditary or learned. Many Studies have been made using twins to identify that about forty percent of differences in personality are hereditary. (Vernon et al., 1998) From this we can see that it is not only a matter of whether a person in born with these skills but one must also build on them to become a successful leader.

Martin Luther King definitely fits these qualities of a strong leader because he was able to remain loyal to his opinions. For example, many of his supporters wanted to create riots and cause a lot of destruction when fighting for civil rights. On the other hand, King did not listen to these comments but instead urged everyone to do peaceful protests and to not fight back. Thus doing this he was able to lead his people to a successful future with no segregation. If Martin Luther King did not follow his own guidelines to fighting for civil rights African Americans might not have the same rights they have today. Another example of MLK being

grandfather and father were ministers, so Martin decided to carry that on by becoming a
