Through this it is illustrated how societal expectations can shape behaviour and attitude in people, even if that behaviour is something which is brings conflict to their own personal attitudes and beliefs. From this I as a reader gain an understanding about the broader society and the great power that groups and societies have on individuals in those societies. Through these expectations people wield great power over the lives of other, through it great beauty and kindness can develop, but also great evil and sadness as well. It is through our society that we as people are shaped, both by our families and friends who love us, but also by the broader community in which media and what we watch can create stereotypes in gender, race, age and body image. This great power of others on our own lives can be focused for good, in excelling individuals to achieve greatness and following their dreams, as seen in Dorrigo, or it can be used to create a sadness, hate against different people, self-loathing and great evil in the world.
In such an environment, it becomes easier for people to identify themselves and easily resolve issues affecting them using strategies that are better suitable for them. Ethnorace also proves to be effective because it allows all members of society to start learning more about the other different types of ethnicities that exist in societies around the world, from those that are different that theirs and even from their own. In doing so, they will not only start to appreciate the different cultures that exist, but also learn about their own biases against others and explore their own views about others, and how they can change any of their own behaviors, attitudes or beliefs that may be harmful or disrespectful towards others. Therefore, the theory of ethnorace also proves to be a learning opportunity for all members of
As I am from diverse background that is raised in the Pakistan and experienced high school and college life in the United States, I often had to go through various difficulties to know what people consider acceptable behavior and what is deviant behavior. Because of this experience, I have gotten better at understanding people. This is very important as this personal characteristics helps me to make sure I do not ending up disrespecting people. By listening to people and observing their actions and their response to different situations, I try to analyze and understand their culture and their moral beliefs. Because of this skills, I try to approach people and interact with them in the best way possible and make a positive difference in their lives.
There is an old Moorish proverb that reads, “He who does not travel, does not know the value of man.” That quote resonates deep within me because I have a yearning to use my education to empower those in need. In order to do so, I need to see and experience the world outside of the one I am accustomed to. Curiosity is one of the traits that define the person that I am; because of this trait I always ask questions about the world around me and the people I meet. This is one of the driving forces behind my desire to venture outside of the United States to learn a new language and culture.
For example, Sasse views travel as, “...an opportunity to help our kids to get out of their comfort zones, learn to see different social and economic arrangements.” (Sasse 18). Ben Sasse views travel simply as a way to get out of one’s own bubble to learn about the various living situations that people, even a neighborhood away, experience. Therefore, although traveling is not the only way for a kid to be made aware of the different circumstances that people around the world experience on a daily basis, it is one of the most effective ways as they will be able to experience them firsthand. This sentiment holds true in my own life as well as for many others.
We have all encountered social conformity in life, whether it has been consciously or unconsciously, by accepting the dominant culture’s expectation of us. What people say and how they behave are vastly influenced by others.” She touches on
A Moving Experience Moving houses had always been strenuous for me, especially since my family had moved multiple times. This was my family’s third time moving. We were moving from California to Indiana. Even though it was my third time moving, I still found it arduous to move locations and to say goodbye to the friends I made in California.
Based on a real story, Into the Wild can make us think from different perspectives about what the main character Christopher McCandless did. Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer is a dramatic but also remarkable story from a young, newly graduated, college student that escaped for a long wild journey but never came back. As time passes throughout the book, the reader may notice how the main character interacts with society and nature, finally McCandless dies in the wild but even though he was struggling for survival he died happy. Some people never get out of their comfort zone, others are tired of it and retire from their comfort zone to have different experiences in life, some are good enough or some are terrible.
The feeling of doing nothing while traveling frequently caused anxiety for people who are used to their daily work routine; taking pictures while traveling offered people a sense of purpose when they
Moving is always hard. It is harder if you are moving from your birthplace to a culturally different country after spending most of your teenage years. I moved from Bangladesh to New York about a year and a half ago and let me tell you, it was not easy. I had to leave the place I grew up in, my friends and relatives and start a new life here in America. Probably the only good part was that at least I was with my family throughout this hardship.
Our vision enlarges as we travel and we start thinking out of the box. It gives us an opportunity to detach from our regular lives and helps us get away from our monotonous
Tourism can be considered one of the most significant economic and social phenomena of the twentieth and twenty-first century. The evolving of the tourist’s behavior has triggered a series of changes in the way of operating the tourism businesses. From traditional travel agencies, hotels and airlines up to the online tour operators. All tour operators have had to adapt to the changes of the individual as a traveler and this has led to continuous development of strategies by the agents.
In a different environment where no one can really put a label on you, especially if you are alone, it is probable that certain issues or aspects of one’s personality, which would have otherwise remained dormant, manifest themselves, allowing you to be “born again”. In this situation, you don’t live in the past or the future, but in the present where it is almost impossible for you to ignore your inner self, biases, values, and opinions. The thought of traveling alone usually expresses a feeling of loneliness, but in reality being on your own encourages you to learn and understand yourself in ways that cannot be achieved by staying in your habitual territory. This can occur because of many factors including, but not limited to individuals around us and their culture.
Studying abroad is a growing opportunity that many people around the world of all different ages take. In 2012, over 760 thousand international students studied abroad in the United States alone. The positive reasons for studying abroad are numerous, but there are also negative ones too. Studying abroad brings with itself a lot of preparation and responsibility. Also many people see acculturating oneself and making new friends in a new place can be challenging.
“With 8 million people flying each day, the concept of travel as a rare escape is outdated. Obstacles that prevented people traveling, like high costs, continue to fall away. For those with the means, travel has become a lifestyle. Barriers like language are disappearing with the advent of smart translation apps. Cheap flights are empowering time-short travelers to jet off for weekends.
